Being the “man of the house” is changing.

It’s not about control.
It’s not about silence.
It’s not about carrying everything alone until you burn out.

It’s about leadership.

The kind of leadership that brings peace into your home.
The kind that protects your family through presence, patience, consistency, and emotional strength.
The kind that says, “I’m willing to do the work so I can show up better for the people I love.”

For many men, fathers, and husbands, the goal is simple:

To be calmer.
To communicate better.
To lead by example.
To protect without shutting down.
To love their family without losing themselves.
To become the kind of man who can feel safe in their home.

Josh Loney offers counselling support for men, fathers, and husbands who want practical strategies to show up as their best selves; at home, in relationships, and in everyday life.

Together, we can redefine what it means to be the man of the house.

Not louder.
Not harder.
Not disconnected.

Grounded. Present. Strong. Peaceful.

Most men don’t need another person telling them to “talk about their feelings.”

They need someone to understand the weight they’re carrying.

The pressure to provide.
The pressure to stay calm.
The pressure to lead.
The pressure to protect.
The pressure to keep showing up, even when they’re tired, stressed, disconnected, or questioning who they are becoming.

Fatherhood changes men too.

It changes your schedule.
Your sleep.
Your patience.
Your priorities.
Your relationship.
Your sense of identity.

And yet, many dads are expected to just adapt quietly.

But carrying it quietly doesn’t mean it isn’t heavy.

Counselling gives men a space to unpack what they’re carrying without shame, blame, or pressure.

Not to make you weak.
To help you become more grounded.
More present.
More regulated.
More connected.
More capable of leading your home with strength and peace.

Because your family doesn’t just need you to provide.

They need you present.
They need you steady.
They need you well.

You don’t have to do it all by yourself.

Overwhelmed dads don’t always look overwhelmed.

Sometimes overwhelm looks like pulling away, snapping quickly, staying busy, overworking, shutting down, feeling numb, drinking more, losing patience, or saying “I’m fine” when you’re clearly not.

For many fathers, stress is carried quietly.

The pressure to provide.
The pressure to stay calm.
The pressure to be strong.
The pressure to hold everything together for everyone else.

But these signs are not character flaws. There may be signs that your nervous system is overloaded.

Counselling can help men and fathers understand what is happening underneath the surface, and begin responding with more clarity, regulation, and support.

As we lead up to Father’s Day, this is a gentle reminder that dads need care too.

Before Monday starts, read and reflect....
”Most men don’t become 'angry,' 'distant,' or 'shut down' out of nowhere.

Often, it’s the nervous system under pressure.

When stress builds, your brain and body shift into protection mode.

Your heart rate changes.
Your breathing changes.
Your patience gets shorter.
Your body prepares to react.
Your thinking can become more rigid.
Your ability to communicate clearly can drop.

This is biology.

When the brain detects pressure, threat, conflict, responsibility, or emotional overload, the nervous system starts prioritizing survival over connection.

For men, this can look like:

Pulling away.
Snapping quickly.
Overworking.
Going quiet.
Avoiding hard conversations.
Feeling numb.
Getting defensive.
Needing control.
Saying “I’m fine” when you’re not.

Dr. Andrew Huberman explains:

“Stress signals the body and brain to mobilize more resources to better meet challenges.”

In other words, stress is not just “in your head.”

It is your brain and body preparing you to act.

But when stress stays high for too long, those survival responses can start showing up in your relationships, your parenting, your communication, and your ability to feel present at home.

Because your state drives your behaviour.

A regulated man can pause.
An overwhelmed man reacts.

A regulated father can listen.
An overwhelmed father shuts down or snaps.

A regulated husband can communicate.
An overwhelmed husband protects himself by disconnecting.

Psychotherapy helps you understand your patterns at the level of the nervous system, not just the surface behaviour.

It helps you notice what happens before the reaction.

The tight chest.
The racing thoughts.
The urge to shut down.
The anger that covers fear.
The silence that covers overwhelm.
The need to stay busy so you don’t have to feel what is actually there.

This is where change begins.

Not by pretending stress doesn’t affect you.

But by learning how your brain, body, and behaviour are connected — and building the skills to respond instead of react.

Strong men don’t ignore their nervous system.

They learn how to work with it.

Dads carry more than most people know. 💙

They carry responsibility.
Pressure.
Provider stress.
Relationship stress.
The weight of wanting to protect their family, lead well, and still somehow keep themselves together in the process.

But being a strong father does not mean carrying everything alone.

At New Mindset Therapy, support, guidance, and counselling are available from Josh Loney, a mental health counsellor who brings not only professional experience but also the lived understanding of being a husband and father in a world that is constantly changing, demanding, and noisy.

Counselling offers a space to unpack the real things men often carry quietly:

💭 The pressure to provide
💭 The fear of not doing enough
💭 The stress of parenting in today’s world
💭 The challenge of showing up emotionally
💭 The complicated thoughts and feelings that come with marriage, fatherhood, work, and responsibility

Because taking care of your mental health does not take away from your family.

It helps you show up for them with more patience, clarity, presence, and strength.

This Father’s Day season, we’re reminding dads that support is not weakness.

It’s leadership.
It’s self-respect.
It’s love in action.

We’re accepting new clients.

Therapy Is More Than a Conversation 🌟🌟🌟

At New Mindset Therapy, we believe that seeking support should feel compassionate, safe, respectful, and clinically grounded.

Many people use the words *counselling* and *psychotherapy* interchangeably. While both can be meaningful and supportive, psychotherapy often involves a deeper level of clinical skill, assessment, treatment planning, ethical decision-making, trauma-informed care, and ongoing professional development.

The Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers reminds clinicians that private practice and the controlled act of psychotherapy are not considered entry-level competencies. They require experience, supervision, consultation, reflection, continued learning, and sound professional judgment.

This matters because good therapy is more than offering comfort, advice, or validation.

Good psychotherapy requires the ability to understand what may be happening beneath the surface emotionally, relationally, developmentally, psychologically, and sometimes physiologically. It requires knowing when to move forward, when to slow down, when to consult, when to refer, and when a client may need a different level of care.

At New Mindset Therapy, this responsibility is taken seriously.

Our owner, Katie Michaud, is a Registered Social Worker, EMDRIA Certified EMDR Therapist, and clinical leader who is deeply grounded in integrity and ethical practice. The ethics, standards, and guidance of the OCSWSSW are taken seriously and reflected in the expectations we hold for all clinicians who work at New Mindset Therapy, regardless of their individual regulatory bodies.

Our clinicians are expected to practise within their scope, seek consultation, engage in ongoing learning, maintain strong ethical standards, and approach this work with humility, care, and professionalism.

The public’s care and safety are the foundation for everything we do.

We value warmth.
We value compassion.
We value connection.

But we also value competence, integrity, clinical responsibility, and ethical care.

Because clients deserve more than someone who helps them feel heard.

They deserve care that helps them heal safely.

June is National Indigenous History Month. 🌿🪶

This month, we honour the strength, resilience, culture, and healing journeys of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

We also recognize the very real mental health impacts of intergenerational trauma, colonization, grief, loss, identity disruption, and the ongoing strength it takes to heal, individually, within families, and across communities.

Healing is cultural.
Healing is personal.
Healing is possible.

At New Mindset Therapy, we are honoured to support Indigenous clients, including our brothers and sisters from Akwesasne as well as Indigenous Veterans, CAF members, and their families.

Several of our therapists are now registered with NIHB, and we also provide support through Medavie Blue Cross and VAC-registered services.

If you or someone you love is seeking support, we are here to help with care that is compassionate, respectful, and trauma-informed.

Environment matters.

And you'll never convince me otherwise.

Who you surround yourself with. What you listen to.What you tolerate.Where you choose to grow.

The right environment can change everything.

Don't believe me?

🇨🇦✦Happy Canadian Armed Forces Day✦🇨🇦

Today, I'm not just posting as a therapist, I'm posting as a mom and a friend who has watched people I love put on a uniform and walk toward the unknown so that the rest of us can live freely.
That kind of courage deserves more than a single day of recognition, but today we pause, we honour, and we say:
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. 💙🇨🇦💛

To every serving member, every veteran, and every family standing behind the uniform .... you are seen, you are valued, and you are not forgotten. 🙏

At New Mindset Therapy, we are proud to support the mental health and wellness of CAF members and Veterans through Medavie Blue Cross (VAC).
Because prevention is key, and you deserve care that meets you where you are.

MEN & MYTHS ABOUT THERAPY
Let’s clear a few things up.

One of the biggest myths about therapy is that it’s only for people who are falling apart.
It’s not.

Therapy is for men who are carrying pressure.
Men who are trying to hold it together.
Men who are showing up for work, for their families, and for everyone else — while quietly running on empty.

Another myth?
Talking about what’s going on makes you weak.
It doesn’t.
Avoiding it usually keeps you stuck longer.

At New Mindset Therapy, we do therapy differently.
We focus on real-world strategies, measurable progress, reduced symptoms, and building the kind of inner strength that helps men feel more grounded, clear, connected, and in control.

Did you know?
More than half of the clients who attend New Mindset Therapy are men between the ages of 25 and 55.

We are proud to be the support that this community trusts.

Because the truth is simple:
Strong men do the work.

Because they care about the life they’re building, the people they love, and the man they want to become.
