The Discipline of Freedom

At first glance, discipline and freedom seem like opposites.

Discipline sounds restrictive.
Freedom sounds expansive.

Yet one of the earliest translations of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras that I read is Yoga: The Discipline of Freedom.

The word discipline comes from the same root as disciple—a student, a learner.

To be a student of yoga is not simply to learn poses. It is to remain curious. To be willing to begin again. To keep showing up, even when progress feels slow or invisible.

Discipline is not about perfection.

It is expressed through our willingness to return—to practice, to learn, and to see ourselves more clearly.

Over time, we discover that freedom is not something we achieve. It is something that emerges through steady practice.

✨ Reflection

Where in your life does discipline create more freedom rather than less?

What is one practice in your life that creates freedom for you?

I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Your life is not getting in the way of your practice. It is the practice.

Many of us believe we would practice more if life were less busy.

If we had more time.
Less stress.
Fewer responsibilities.

But yoga teaches us something different.

The mat is where we learn. Life is where we apply what we've learned.

The patience we cultivate in a challenging pose.
The steadiness we find when things feel uncertain.
The awareness we bring to the breath.

These qualities aren't meant to stay on the mat.

They are meant to accompany us into conversations, relationships, work, family life, and the unexpected moments that make up our days.

The real question isn't:

"How can I fit yoga into my life?"

The question is:

"How can I bring the wisdom of yoga into this moment?"

✨ Reflection:

What recurring challenge, irritation, or inconvenience in your life might actually be giving you an opportunity to practice?

The place that hurts is not always the place that needs attention.

This week in class we explored an interesting relationship between the hip flexors and the gluteal muscles.

Many students experience discomfort in standing poses through the lower back. Yet often the issue isn't the back itself. Tight hip flexors can pull the trunk forward of the body's midline, forcing the lower back to work harder than necessary. When we create space through the front hips and awaken support through the pelvis, standing poses can suddenly feel lighter, steadier, and more integrated.

One of the things I love most about yoga is that it teaches us to look beyond symptoms and investigate relationships.

The practice becomes less about "fixing" and more about understanding.

These are the kinds of observations I share each week in my newsletter—reflections from the mat, practical insights from teaching, free practice resources, and inspiration to support your own journey as a student of yoga.

If you'd like to receive the weekly newsletter, visit our website and join the community.

Because yoga isn't just something we do in class.

It's something we learn to observe, understand, and live.

Finding Balance in an Unbalanced World ✨

This past week at Yoga Journey, one theme seemed to emerge again and again: balance.

In our Community Sangha on Monday evening we explored the yogic concepts of Prakriti and Purusha, along with the three gunas—tamas, rajas, and sattva.

In Ayurveda: The Science of Life workshop, we explored the doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—and how these energies influence our bodies, minds, and overall well-being.

What struck me most is how relevant these ancient teachings feel today.

We live in a world that often feels fast-paced, overstimulating, and out of balance. Yet yoga and Ayurveda offer practical tools to help us navigate life with greater awareness, steadiness, and clarity.

Before we can restore balance, we first have to recognize when balance has been lost.

✨ How are you sleeping?
✨ How are you eating and digesting?
✨ How are you spending your time?
✨ Who are you surrounding yourself with?
✨ What habits are shaping your days?

This is the practice of Svadhyaya—self-study.

In the Iyengar tradition, self-study isn't simply reading books or learning philosophy. It is observing ourselves honestly through practice. It is learning to recognize our patterns, our tendencies, our strengths, and our challenges.

Through that awareness, we begin moving toward Sattva—the state of balance, clarity, harmony, and inner luminosity.

Perhaps that is one of yoga's greatest gifts: not an escape from life, but the ability to meet life with greater wisdom, steadiness, and grace.

Finding Steadiness

In the midst of daily life, we are constantly moving between ease and unease—between sukha and duḥkha.

Sometimes these shifts are subtle.
Other times, they feel overwhelming.

Yoga doesn’t ask us to avoid these states.
It teaches us how to meet them.

Through practice, we begin to steady the mind, soften our reactivity, and create space—space to see more clearly and respond with greater awareness.

Over time, we come closer to something deeper within us…
a place that is not shaken by the fluctuations of the mind.
