The Discipline of Freedom
At first glance, discipline and freedom seem like opposites.
Discipline sounds restrictive.
Freedom sounds expansive.
Yet one of the earliest translations of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras that I read is Yoga: The Discipline of Freedom.
The word discipline comes from the same root as disciple—a student, a learner.
To be a student of yoga is not simply to learn poses. It is to remain curious. To be willing to begin again. To keep showing up, even when progress feels slow or invisible.
Discipline is not about perfection.
It is expressed through our willingness to return—to practice, to learn, and to see ourselves more clearly.
Over time, we discover that freedom is not something we achieve. It is something that emerges through steady practice.
✨ Reflection
Where in your life does discipline create more freedom rather than less?
What is one practice in your life that creates freedom for you?
I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
