Interview: NHL Star Jason Arnott Set for Return to Wasaga Beach in Upcoming Alumni Game

Wasaga Beach will welcome back former NHL All Star Jason Arnott for the eagerly anticipated NHL Alumni Hockey Game on February 10 at the new Wasaga Arena on River Road West.

The Alumni Game, which brings together notable NHL stars such as Shayne Corson and Scott Thornton, is part of the "Breaking the Ice Festival." The two-week festival not only kicks off the town's 50th-anniversary celebrations but also heralds the grand opening of the state-of-the-art NHL-size, twin-pad arena and library – a milestone for the community.

Jason Arnott, who scored the legendary game-winning goal in double overtime for the New Jersey Devils during the 2000 Stanley Cup Finals, will be a focal point of the event. Over his storied career, Arnott has made significant contributions on the ice during his 18-year NHL career, amassing an extraordinary 900 points in the NHL and becoming a World Champion with Canada in 1994.

In a recent interview with Georgian Sports News, Arnott reflected fondly on his upbringing in the Georgian Bay area: "Growing up in Wasaga was the best part of my life. And I'll never forget where I came from, and just happy to be a part of it and I’m excited to actually see the new rink. I haven't seen it yet."

Arnott also recollected about his career-defining Stanley Cup goal and thinks back to his childhood days. He said: "I think every kid growing up in their basement always plays in their mind that they're gonna score the Stanley Cup game-winning goal. And it came true for me. The best time of my NHL life. That's what we played for."

“I was fortunate enough to win it and score the game-winning goal, which was just icing on the cake, and just what a thrill and experience something I'll never ever definitely ever forget.”

New Riptide Program to Elevate Youth Hockey in Georgian Triangle

The Georgian Triangle area is set to welcome a fresh youth hockey initiative with the arrival of the South Georgian Bay Riptide, aiming to bolster the skill development of aspiring young hockey players.

The development program aims to make waves in the communities of Blue Mountains, Collingwood, Wasaga, and surrounding areas. Designed for U7, U8, and U9 age groups, the program offers an affordable, safe, and competitive environment for young players to hone their skills on the ice.

Craig Cescon, head coach of the Meaford Knights Junior A team, and his brother Brent have partnered up to bring this opportunity to life. In Coach Cescon's words: “Our main focus is the development of the children. We are providing families with an affordable, safe, fun and competitive hockey program.”

The Riptide's inaugural tryouts for the winter 2024/2025 season are slated for Sunday, April 7, and Sunday, April 14, at the new Wasaga arena. For more information, email Brent Cescon at [email protected]

Wasaga Beach Prepares for New Junior A Hockey Team

Wasaga Beach has been announced as the new home for a Greater Metro Hockey League (GMHL) Junior A hockey team that will arrive next year.

The team, that is yet to be named, was unveiled by Mayor Brian Smith at the recently constructed twin-pad Wasaga Stars Arena on River Road West. He stated that the new team will help bring through new local players.

Mayor Smith said: "Hockey stirs an incredible passion within the Wasaga Beach community. Our residents have longed for a local team they could rally behind, and it was a priority for the council to make this happen. It builds morale in the community and builds that spirit that the community has tenfold."

He added: "This team will serve as a catalyst to unite our community as we collectively cheer, support, and celebrate their efforts and achievements,"

GMHL's Bradford Bulls owner Brandon Billie has been granted ownership of the new team after confirming the $70,000 expansion fee needed.

"We want to be involved in the community and have a lot of Wasaga Beach born players that want to come here and develop and grow hockey in the community." Billie told reporters.

A landmark GMHL match between the Bradford Bulls and the Meaford Knights is slated for February 12 at 7 pm at the Wasaga Stars Arena as part of the Town’s Breaking the Ice Festival.

Tickets are priced at $10 and can be purchased at the door. All proceeds from ticket sales of the game will go towards supporting the Wasaga Beach Minor Hockey Association.

Furthermore, on February 12, the Town will launch a naming contest for the newly-formed Junior A team. The contest aims to involve the community in choosing a fitting name that embodies the spirit and identity of Wasaga Beach.
