Most golfers can’t pass this 6-shot distance test.

Introducing the GSPro Ladder Challenge

This might be the simplest drill I’ve found for actually lowering your scores.

Start at 50 yards and work up in 50-yard increments:

50
100
150
200
250
300

The goal at each distance is to land the ball on the fly inside the yellow circle around the pin before moving on.

Sounds easy.

Until you try it.

The brilliance of this drill is its simplicity and accountability. You quickly find out if you can actually control your distances. — one of the biggest separators between good golfers and great golfers.

If you can reliably hit your numbers like this, your scores will plummet.

Basic Rules

• Start at 50 yards
• 10 attempts per distance
• Ball must land in the yellow circle
• Complete it before moving on

Once you improve, reduce it to 5 attempts per distance.

Today it took me 9 total shots to complete all 6 distances — my current personal record.

If your driver carries around 200 yards, try running the ladder in 25-yard increments instead.

Example:

50
75
100
125
150
175
200

Same rules. Same yellow circle.

Hard Mode – The Consecutive Rule

Miss a distance and you move back one level.

Example:
50 ✅
100 ✅
150 ❌

Now you go back to 100 yards before trying 150 again.

This turns it into a serious pressure test.

If you run GSPro, try the GSPro Ladder Challenge and tag me.

Also tagging because this is one of the coolest ways I’ve found to use the software.

Current record: 9 shots.
Let’s see if anyone can beat it.

Left: Current
Right: 2022

This is what happens when you fully commit to the process, not the payoff. I went down to see two winters ago. And it was the best lesson I’d ever taken. But I’m a dad with two young ones, so getting the reps in hasn’t been easy.

Real swing change isn’t about chasing perfect positions — it’s about understanding the laws that actually control ball flight, and building a motion that matches them. That takes time, patience, and a lot of uncomfortable reps.

The swing you see on the right came from sharpening fundamentals, training intention, and staying disciplined through months where the progress was invisible.

If you’re working on your own swing, remember this:

You can’t skip the time it takes for new patterns to become natural.
But if you stay consistent and trust the work… the transformation will come.

Shoutout for holding me accountable this winter with my body. You definitely should invest in some time with him.

finally looks nicey at the top. Thanks pro.

The Takeaway. Those first couple of feet the club and your hands move are essential. This student is already a good ball striker, with his miss being a slight pull hook (ball starts left and curves left)

Every move has a cause and effect. Here the right hand was taking over a little too much in the takeaway, rotating that face towards the sky. Once we got the club in a new position with the club face square to the players spine angle on the takeaway, everything changed.
Notice in the last pictures what that right hand is doing….

The right hand was not applying downward force… and now it is.

A couple minutes later I was yelling “we have a ball striker on our hands” down the driving range 😂 you gotta love it!

Most of the right handed golfers I teach are also right hand dominant. A couple simple things going on here that clearly make a huge difference.

When we apply torque (twist) to the right hand in the downswing it tends to lead to an early extension of your right arm. If that arm twists and extends, it tends to lead to a hook, and if it does nothing, the club face will be left wide open. The right hands job is to apply a downward force (push) not twist.

This is fairly typical of the right hand dominant person as their strong arm is wanting to take over the swing. This causes the right shoulder to rotate and “Come over the top”

By getting this player to place his lead hand on his chest and feeling like that hand is the first thing to move in the downswing, a little magic happened. It taught him what the true responsibility of that right hand is while also helping him move his ankles, knees, hips, chest and shoulders in unison. ✅✅✅✅

A simple visual with a backstory….

Two seasons ago I played in a tournament; was paired with and left completely jealous of his short game. I also quickly came to the realization that I couldn’t figure out how he could hit it higher and land it softer, while also being able to hit it lower with more spin than any strike scenario I could create. It pi**ed me off.

So I got better by finding smart, SMART people and asking questions (shoutout , and )

So my technique improved and people would tell me I was a good wedge player, but it still felt off. I couldn’t control the height or spin of the shot like others. More frustration ensued.

Last year when I ordered my wedges, I ordered the same specs as my irons and the same low bounce wedges I’d used my whole life. As you can see the SM8 (black head) the strike is consistent but well in the toe. Much harder to control the spin with that strike. Great for high soft ones where you want a low smash factor. But bad for 90 yard shots with a bunker short.

This year I smartened up and got fit properly, ending up with the same shaft but lighter, and a different bounce in both 55*and 60* (D Grind🐐).

If you’re still reading… the result is clear with just a couple of pictures. I finally feel like I am set up to succeed.

Find smarter people than yourself to help you improve. A swing coach to help your technique and a club fitter to bring it all together.

Also the SM9’s are a cheat code🔥

Don’t give up on your dreams. I’ve wanted to take home the Oslerbrook Long Drive belt for years. Finally hit a fairway. It will hang proud in the Academy all week. All the speed training, officially worth it. 😂

It bothered me that one of the world’s best golf instructors didn’t explain himself better here. I have great respect for Jim, but believe he has a responsibility here because of his reach. Leaving out valuable information can lead people in the wrong direction. In no way is Bryson’s a “stock” 5 iron. The reason Bryson’s “5 iron” is lofted at 19 degrees is to eliminate spin because of how much speed he can generate (less loft=less potential spin if you have the speed to keep the ball in the air). However manufacturers have been telling you for years “this year our clubs go 20 yards further!!!!”when all they have done over time is turned your 7 iron into a 5 iron loft and told you that it’s going farther. The biggest problem with that is now a traditional 5 iron is lofted like a 3 iron making it far harder for the average person to hit. This leads to everyone having a 5 iron in their bag that goes nowhere because it’s the same loft as their 5 wood that is longer, easier to hit and designed to help the ball in the air. For those going into the new year with new clubs on their mind, make sure you as about the loft of your clubs and ask how the whole set will flow together. Another great example of this is the 3 wood. If you don’t have the swing speed to get a club with 15 degrees of loft in the air, an 18/19 degree club could potentially go further with a proper fit. I’ve added lofts from back in the day so you see how out of control this has gotten.
