While water is important, dehydration occurs as a result of losing more fluids than you take it. Losing fluids also means disrupting the balance of minerals (salts and sugars) in your body.

When we exercise we sweat. Some individuals sweat more than others. In fact, some individuals lose more salt than others while sweating.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How do you know when you need to hydrate? Thirst is the obvious sign. That said, you should also pay attention to other signs such as dark urine or dry mouth.
