Can we normalize the struggle?

Fitness can look really polished on social media.

But real life isn't always PRs, before-and-after photos, heavier weights and perfect consistency.

Real people are navigating real things.

Cancer treatments and lumpectomies.
Parkinson's.
Hip and knee replacements.
Arthritis.
Chronic pain.
Back problems.
Injuries that don't seem to heal as quickly as they used to.
Menopause and changing bodies.
Caring for aging parents or sick partners.
Grief.
Stress.
Exhaustion.
Surgeries and medical appointments.
And sometimes simply a season of life where everything feels harder than usual.

And they're still trying to take care of themselves.

That's something I wish we talked about more in the fitness industry.

Our job as coaches isn't to take every person who walks through the door and try to mold them into our idea of what a "fit person" should be.

It's to meet the person standing in front of us.

Sometimes progress means getting stronger.

Sometimes it means modifying an exercise so it doesn't hurt.

Sometimes it's rebuilding confidence after surgery.

Sometimes it's maintaining strength through treatment.

Sometimes it's getting down to the floor—and knowing you can get back up.

And sometimes the victory is simply continuing to show up during a really difficult chapter of life.

Fitness should add to your life, not make you feel like you're failing at another thing.

You don't need a perfect body, a perfect program or a perfect season of life to belong in a gym.

You just need a place that's willing to meet you where you are—and help you move forward from there. ❤️

Charcuterie for dinner? Absolutely. 🙌

We had a charcuterie board for dinner on our recent kayaking trip, and it reminded me why this is one of my favourite easy meals for camping, entertaining or a relaxed dinner at home.

And despite their reputation, charcuterie boards don't have to be an overload of cheese, crackers and processed meat.

My formula for making one into a satisfying meal:

🥚 **Protein:** chicken or turkey, smoked salmon, eggs, hummus or a little cured meat
🧀 **Cheese:** pick 1–2 you really love
🥒 **Lots of produce:** cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, carrots, grapes, berries or apples
🥖 **Something crunchy:** crackers, pita, pretzels or good bread
🥜 **Extras:** nuts, pickles, dips, mustard and something sweet

(On our kayaking trip, the something sweet was peanut M&M's. 😋)

But here's the part I think matters even more:

**How you eat it.**

Charcuterie boards are incredibly easy to graze from without ever really feeling like you've eaten dinner.

A cracker here. A piece of cheese there. A few nuts while you're talking. Another cracker...

There's no obvious beginning or end to the meal.

Instead, try making yourself a plate from the board. Include some protein, plenty of produce, something you really enjoy and **enough food to actually satisfy you.**

Then sit down and enjoy it as a meal.

You can always go back for more if you're still hungry.

The goal isn't to make the lowest-calorie charcuterie board possible.

It's to enjoy delicious food **and actually experience it as a meal rather than an evening of endless picking.**

And yes, peanut M&M's can absolutely make the board. 😉

Saturday mornings at Ascend 💪

A little cardio. A lot of lunges. Some fresh air. And a group of people getting stronger together.

One of the things I love about training is that fitness doesn’t have to look just one way.

Sometimes it’s lifting heavy weights. Sometimes it’s working on balance or mobility. Sometimes it’s getting outside, moving your body and getting your heart rate up with a group of people beside you doing the same thing.

It all counts.

And while you can absolutely exercise on your own, there’s something pretty great about showing up on a Saturday morning and doing hard things alongside other people.

Especially when there are a lot of lunges involved. 😅

I just got back from a two-day kayaking trip up Indian Arm — and I’ll admit, it was a bit outside my comfort zone.

I’ve done lots of hiking and backpacking, but overnight kayaking is new to me.

And on that first day, I was struggling.

My kayak doesn’t have a rudder, and I felt like I was being pushed in every direction except the one I wanted to go. There were moments when I genuinely wondered why I was doing this. Part of me wanted to turn around, go home, and spend my time doing things I already know how to do.

But if I had, I would have missed so much.

🪼 We paddled over **thousands of jellyfish** — so many that at one point we thought we were coming into shallow water.

🦭 We saw a family of seals resting along the shore, including four little pups tucked in with the adults.

🦦 We watched otters playing in the water.

💦 We found waterfalls tucked into places I never would have seen from a road or hiking trail.

And by the second day, I was actually starting to get the hang of the kayak.

It reminded me of something:

**Being outside your comfort zone often feels uncomfortable simply because you don’t know what you’re doing yet.**

The same thing happens in the gym.

Walking in for the first time. Learning to squat or deadlift. Trying a heavier weight. Working on your balance. Joining a new group. Doing something with your body that you’re not yet confident you can do.

There’s often a part of us that would rather retreat to what feels familiar.

We don’t need to constantly push ourselves to our limits. And we certainly shouldn’t ignore the voice that tells us when something genuinely isn’t safe.

But sometimes it’s worth getting a little uncomfortable.

Because if we only ever do the things we already know we can do, we might miss out on discovering what else we’re capable of.

And sometimes there are jellyfish, seals, otters and hidden waterfalls on the other side. 💛

🥗 Tanja’s Big Garden Salad

This has become one of my favourite summer meals! It’s fresh, filling, packed with veggies, and basically impossible to mess up. 😄

The best part? Use whatever is growing in your garden—or needs to be used up in your fridge.

Creamy Avocado Dressing 🥑

Blend together:
• 1 ripe avocado
• ½ cup plain Greek yogurt
• 1–2 tbsp light mayo
• 1–2 tsp honey
• Juice of ½ lemon
• Juice of ½ lime
• 1 clove garlic
• Salt + pepper to taste
• Splash of water to thin, if needed

**For the salad:**

Start with a BIG bowl of mixed greens and add whatever you have:

🥬 Roasted beets
🫛 Roasted green beans
🧅 Roasted onions
🥒 Cucumbers
🍅 Cherry tomatoes
🌽 Corn
🧀 Feta

Honestly, almost anything goes!

I love roasting a big batch of beets, beans and onions ahead of time with a little olive oil, salt and pepper and keeping them in the fridge. Then I can throw this together for lunch in just a few minutes.

It’s colourful, satisfying, full of fibre and nutrients—and such a delicious way to eat what’s in season.

Save this one for the next time your garden (or fridge!) is overflowing with veggies. 🥗🌱

When Dineke first thought about joining Ascend, she almost talked herself out of it.

“That is not for me. Too expensive. Too embarrassing. Nothing works for me anyway. What will they think when I come there like this—barely able to walk?”

Severe knee problems had changed her life. She had gone from gardening and being active to sometimes needing two canes just to get around her home. Stairs were difficult. Getting down on the floor was difficult. At family gatherings, she often found herself sitting and watching.

Then her daughter encouraged her to try our 6-Week Fit for Life program.

When Dineke first started, she needed to sit down every minute or so during her sessions.

Today, she can complete her entire warm-up, 30-minute workout and stretching without sitting down. 🙌

She can climb stairs more easily.
She can get down on the floor without support.
She can get herself out of the bathtub with ease.
She seldom uses her cane.
And she can walk farther without being sore for days afterward.

But perhaps our favourite part of Dineke’s story is that she almost didn’t start because she was worried she wouldn’t belong.

Now, here’s what she says to anyone else who feels nervous:

“Just try it. You will like it. If I can do it, you certainly can.”

💪 **Progressive overload doesn’t just mean lifting heavier weights.**

It’s a term we hear ALL the time in fitness right now:

“Does this program use progressive overload?”
“Which workout is best for progressive overload?”

But progressive overload isn’t really a type of workout or a special training method.

It simply means that **over time, something progresses.**

Yes, that can mean adding more weight. But there are LOTS of ways to progress:

➡️ Do more reps with the same weight
➡️ Increase your range of motion
➡️ Slow down and improve control
➡️ Add a pause or eliminate momentum
➡️ Use less assistance
➡️ Progress to a more challenging exercise variation
➡️ Improve your balance, coordination or stability
➡️ Perform cleaner, more consistent reps
➡️ And yes — when appropriate, lift heavier!

At Ascend, adding weight often ISN’T the first progression we’re looking for.

We want to see you move better first.

Maybe you started squatting while holding onto something for support. Now you can squat independently, deeper and with more control.

The number on the dumbbell might be exactly the same — **but you’ve absolutely progressed.**

Of course, doing the exact same exercises with the same weights, reps and effort forever probably won’t keep producing results. Eventually, your body needs a new challenge.

But that doesn’t mean every workout needs to be harder than the last.

We like to think of progression as **earning the next challenge.**

Move well. Build confidence and control. Get stronger. Then keep finding appropriate ways to challenge yourself.

Sometimes progress is more weight on the bar.

Sometimes it’s simply doing something better than you could before. 💪

This week has looked a little different for me. I've been in Ontario visiting family, so instead of mountain hikes and bike rides, I've been exploring Toronto, and a few days in Windsor.

Some of the highlights have been visiting the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Royal Ontario Museum, wandering around the University of Toronto campus, and finally making it to Muji (yes... I stocked up on my favourite pens!).

Travel always changes my routine, but I've learned that staying healthy doesn't mean doing everything perfectly. It means focusing on what I can control.

This week that looked like:

🌸Journaling each morning with intention.
🌸JSneaking in a quick strength workout on most days.
🌸JWalking as much as I could instead of worrying about formal cardio (Jacob and had a few days with A LOT of steps)
🌸JPaying attention to hunger and fullness instead of trying to always hit my protein or calorie targets.

Of course, I also enjoyed some of the local favourites—a peameal bacon sandwich at St. Lawrence Market with Jacob, plenty of restaurant meals, and today we're planning fish and chips with my father in law.

It's easy to think that taking a week away from my usual training would undo some of my progress. After working so hard to build strength and fitness, it can be easy to think that missing a few workouts means you're losing everything.

But that's not how fitness works.

The purpose of this trip isn't to improve my squat or increase my cardiovascular fitness. The purpose is to spend time with family, make memories, and experience a different part of Canada. My job is simply to support that purpose by making healthy choices where they fit.

Sometimes health means training hard.
Sometimes health means recovering.
Sometimes health means enjoying a peameal bacon sandwich.

The key is knowing what season you're in and making the best choices you can within it.

I hope that wherever you are this week—whether life feels routine or a little out of the ordinary—you can focus on progress, not perfection, and remember that one week never defines your long-term health.
