🥗 **Simple Summer Greek Salad**

One of my favourite things about summer? Vegetables actually taste like vegetables again.

When tomatoes are ripe, cucumbers are crisp, and everything is fresh from the garden (or farmers' market), you don't need much to make something delicious.

**You'll need:**
🍅 3–4 ripe tomatoes, chopped
🥒 1 English cucumber, chopped
🫑 1 red bell pepper, chopped
🧅 ¼ red onion, thinly sliced (optional)
🧀 ½ cup crumbled feta
🫒 Kalamata olives (optional… if you're an olive person 😉)

**Simple Dressing:**
🍋 1–2 tbsp fresh lemon juice and/or white vinegar
🧄 Garlic powder
🧂 Salt to taste

Just chop everything, toss it together, and enjoy!

I love serving this alongside grilled chicken or adding the chicken right on top for an easy, high-protein summer meal. It also tastes even better the next day for lunch.

Simple. Fresh. Delicious. ☀️

Happy Father's Day.

Today we're celebrating the dads, grandpas, and father figures who continue to show up.

The ones who make time for their health so they can keep up with their kids, chase their grandkids, tackle adventures, lend a hand, and stay active in the lives of the people they love.

Strength isn't just what happens in the gym.

It's being dependable.
It's being present.
It's carrying more than your share when someone needs help.
It's showing up, year after year.

To all the fathers in our Ascend community, thank you for the example you set and the lives you impact every day.

We hope you have a fantastic Father's Day.

64 km over 3 days on the North Coast Trail (Olympic Peninsula)

The views were spectacular. The beaches felt endless. The rope climbs, slippery algae-covered rocks, ladders, boulders, and steep overland sections reminded us that nature doesn't care how old you are.

This trip reinforced just how important strength, balance, and mobility are.

Most people don't have a goal of scrambling over slippery boulders with a backpack for three days—and that's okay. But everyone has a life they want to keep participating in.

The ability to step confidently over obstacles, recover your balance, get up off the ground, carry what you need, and move through the world without fear is something worth protecting.

Another lesson? Carry less.

When everything you need is on your back, you quickly learn the difference between what is essential and what is simply nice to have. Backpacking has a way of reminding you that we often need far less than we think.

And perhaps my favourite reminder: some things are worth working for.

The views wouldn't have felt the same if we'd been dropped off by boat. The memories wouldn't be the same if they'd come easily. There is a special kind of satisfaction that comes from earning the experience.

I'm grateful for a capable body, for years of staying active, and for friends who keep saying yes to adventure.

Here's to staying strong, staying mobile, and continuing to say yes when life offers something worth doing.

"Get my body back."

I hear this all the time.

After having a baby.
After a stressful year.
After an injury.
After retirement.
After gaining weight.
After losing fitness.

People want to get back to where they were last year. Five years ago. Ten years ago.

But here's the thing:

Your body never left.

Your body has been with you through every chapter of your life.

Through victories and setbacks.
Through seasons of stress and seasons of joy.
Through parenthood, career changes, illness, loss, aging, and everything in between.

Your body has been showing up for you the whole time.

It's on your side.

So instead of trying to go backward, what if you focused on moving forward?

What if you stopped spending energy wishing for an old version of yourself and started investing in the person you are today?

Care for your body.
Fuel it well.
Move it because it feels good to be strong.
Rest it.
Challenge it.
Speak to it with kindness.
Appreciate what it has carried you through.

The goal isn't to get your body back.

The goal is to build a stronger future with the body you have right now.

If you're ready to stop chasing the past and start moving forward, we'd love to help.

We live in a world of instant gratification.

Netflix lets us binge an entire season in a weekend. We can buy strawberries in January. We can video chat with someone across the world in seconds.

So it's no surprise that many women become frustrated with their weight loss journey when results don't happen as quickly as they'd hoped.

Maybe you've thought:

*"What's the point? I'm doing the work and nothing is changing."*

But here's the thing:

Change can happen in an instant.

You can decide today to think differently.
You can choose a new habit right now.
You can take a step toward the person you want to become.

What takes time is for those habits to become automatic.
What takes time is for your body to catch up.
What takes time is for the outside transformation to reflect what's already happening on the inside.

Your mindset shifts first.
Your habits change next.
The results follow.

So today, ask yourself:

**How can I show up fully today and trust the process?**

Be patient with yourself.
Keep showing up.
The transformation is happening—even when you can't see it yet.

In a hiking Facebook group I'm part of, someone asked:

"How many hikes have you done this year?"

It's a fair question, but it got me thinking...

What counts as a hike?

Do only the big adventures count? The overnight trips? The mountain summits? The hikes with epic photos at the top?

Or do the small, ordinary ones count too?

Because if we're counting those, then I've done a lot.

A quick trip up Little Mountain or Qoqolem before work.
A walk by the Vedder River.
An evening climb up Teapot Hill.
A wander through the Community Forest or up Mt. Thom?

They're not the hikes that get posted on social media. They're not the ones people usually brag about.

But they're the ones that keep me fit enough to do the bigger adventures.

I think sometimes we do this with fitness too.

We celebrate the marathon, the 20-pound weight loss, the huge transformation.

But the things that really matter are often the ordinary things:
The walk after dinner.
The workout you almost skipped.
The hike that wasn't epic but got you outside anyway.

The big moments are built on hundreds of small ones.

So if someone asked me how many hikes I've done this year, my answer would depend entirely on what we're counting.

And maybe that's the better question:

Are you moving your body regularly and doing things you enjoy?

Because that's what really counts.

One of our members at Ascend, Sandra, recently completed the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu with her daughter—a four-day trek through the Peruvian Andes that included steep climbs, high elevations, ancient stone steps, and plenty of challenges along the way.

What I love most isn't just that she completed the hike.

It's why she did it.

When her daughter invited her on the adventure of a lifetime, Sandra was able to say yes.

That's what fitness is really about.

It's easy to get caught up in workouts, calories, steps, and exercise programs. But the purpose of fitness isn't fitness.

The purpose of fitness is living.

Maybe you want to hike with friends, travel comfortably, play with your grandkids, garden all afternoon, ride your bike, paddle a lake, or simply have the energy to enjoy your day.

The Inca Trail didn't start in Peru for Sandra.

It started years ago with walks, workouts, hikes, strength training sessions, and small choices made consistently over time. And if you know Sandra, you'll know that adventures are kind of her thing ❤️

The workouts you do today are preparing you for opportunities you don't even know are coming yet.

So here's a question for you:

What kind of life are you training for?

📍 Congratulations, Sandra! We're so proud of you and grateful you shared your adventure with us.
