This is the race that changed sailing forever. 🌊⚠️

In August 1979, more than 300 boats set out on the Fastnet Race off the coast of Ireland and England. Then a vicious storm — far worse than forecast — exploded over the fleet without warning.

Boats were rolled, dismasted, and abandoned. It became one of the most harrowing days in the history of the sport, and triggered one of the largest peacetime rescue operations ever seen in those waters.

But out of that terrible day came change: the harnesses, life rafts, safety qualifications, and storm tactics that protect sailors to this day were shaped by the hard lessons of 1979.

The 2026 Around the Island Race runs July 30~August 1 and challenges crews to circumnavigate Prince Edward Island over approximately 325 nautical miles of some of Atlantic Canada's finest sailing waters.
