🧭 Navigation Skills Courses
Hiking is about getting outside, enjoying nature, and taking in the beauty of the mountains. But every hiker and backpacker also needs to be prepared.
Accurate navigation is one of the most important skills anyone can have in the mountains. In the Rockies, weather and visibility can change rapidly. A clear trail can quickly turn into fog, snow, or flat light—making it difficult to rely on landmarks or even the trail itself. When that happens, the ability to navigate confidently is essential.
Our Navigation 1 and Navigation 2 courses are designed for outdoor enthusiasts who want to build practical navigation skills they can use in the real world.
🧭 Navigation 1 – Back to Basics with Map & Compass
Learn the essential skills of traditional navigation. This course focuses on understanding topographic maps, orienting your map, using a compass, taking and following bearings, and relating the terrain around you to what you see on the map.
🧭 Navigation 2 – Digital Trip Planning & Electronic Navigation
Build on your navigation foundation by learning how to plan trips and navigate using modern digital tools. This course explores electronic navigation, GPS-enabled devices and phone apps, and how to combine digital tools with traditional navigation techniques.
If you spend time hiking or backpacking in the Rockies, investing in your navigation skills will increase your safety, confidence, and independence in the backcountry.
