Vancouver Island Aikido - Campbell River and Courtenay

We are a volunteer-run club teaching the traditional Japanese martial art of Aikido. Everyone is welcome to come and check it out.

We are members of the Canadian Aikido Association which is directly connected to the world headquarters in Japan. Aikido is a Japanese martial art emphasizing economy of movement, timing and leverage to throw and/or immobilize an attacker without causing them injury. The founder of Aikido, O Sensei (1883-1969), believed that the ultimate achievement is to defeat an enemy without even fighting. He is said to have once defeated a skilled swordsman, an officer in the Japanese Navy, by simply moving out of the way of each sword strike until the attacker grew tired and gave up. The attacker soon after became a dedicated student of Aikido.

Our cups are full and our bodies sore after last weekend's Gasshuku (training camp) at Manning Park, taught by Tony Hind Sensei and guest instructor Namba Shihan, 7th dan from the World Headquarters of Aikido in Japan. We trained hard and played hard. Thank you to all that made this an awesome camp!

Terrific seminar in Campbell River this past weekend taught by Tony Hind Shihan, hosted by Troy Beauregard sensei and the Campbell River crew, and made all the better by the attendance of so many of you traveling to join us.

A very big thank you to Tony sensei for his instruction that somehow manages to be both clear and basic and still at times mind-bending.
Props to Troy and the boys, and Frankie, for organizing and pulling it all together. The after-party was a blast and the "Gods of Thunder" dojo venue added an interesting and exciting element. I think a shout-out to the Anchor Inn is well deserved for the practice space (complete with sound effects) and another to Beach Fire Brewing Company for the delicious amber ale.
Finally, but most definitely not least, Happy Birthday 🎂 and congratulations to Grant Babin Sensei on receiving his Godan certificate (ie 5th-degree black belt)

A big thanks to Tony Hind Shihan for coming to Campbell River to teach this weekend. Thanks also to all who traveled to be here & all who worked to make the weekend happen (includingTroy Sensei & family for hosting Saturday evening). Congratulations to Jason on attaining 5th kyu, and to Alex & Tyler on their 2nd kyu. We are all looking forward to the next one... with a bit less snow and a bit more fishing.
