Kyokushin Karate is one of the largest karate organizations in the world, renowned for its highly physical and intense training style. In Japanese, Kyokushin translates to ultimate truth or reality. Rest assured, if you apply yourself in Kyokushin Karate, you will surely learn to defend yourself. Kyokushin is more than just karate. The Campbell River dojo is run as an unregistered non-profit where
any funds collected go toward students that cannot afford karate. In 2003 the first dojo opened in Campbell River. Students competed in many tournaments throughout BC earning many trophies and titles. The dojo hosted many black belts from around BC to share their knowledge and experience. In 2014 Senpai Joedy had to close the school due to health concerns. In 2022 Senpai Joedy formed a partnership with a previous student of Kyokushin from Richmond and opened a dojo at Southgate Middle School. There was an after school class, which was free for students of all ages and it became very popular. Many students progressed to the evening classes. On numerous occasions, students visited the dojo on Gabriola Island where they graded for their belts. CLASSES
We offer classes to students 14+ on Monday and Thursday from 6:00 – 7:30 PM. Please feel free to drop by to watch and join in if you like. There is no charge for a drop in. Currently there is no after school class. FEES “It is my goal to seek out families that can’t afford karate.”
Our fees are of the most reasonable in Campbell River, because for us, it’s not about the money. It’s about teaching karate to as many kids as we can. While we have paying students, these moneys are funneled to those families that cannot afford karate. These monies provide gi’s (uniforms), mouth guards, pads, grading, belts, learning materials and transportation to out of town training and tournaments. Families experiencing financial hardship are encouraged to discuss funding options with Senpai Joedy

Senpai Joedy
“I was bullied in elementary school, so in grade 7 I enrolled in Kyokushin karate to protect myself. I was determined to stop the bullying. I was dedicated, I practiced at home and I rarely missed a class. My physical, fighting and self-defense skills improved and I carried myself with confidence. I knew I could defend myself! Consequently, the bullies no longer found me a target, and in fact, I made friends with some of my previous tormentors!” This is the Kyokushin spirit. Today, Senpai Joedy currently works as a Youth Worker and First Aid Attendant at Southgate Middle School. He has his own classroom with many guitars and he offers free guitar lessons to kids during lunchtime. In his off-time, he volunteers to feed the homeless and plays in the band, “Inclusion”. It is a band that features special needs adult musicians whom play piano, drums, bongo’s Que Cord, accordion and numerous singers. He also enjoys mountain and road cycling, camping, golf, spending time with his cock-a-poo Cooper and family.
