The Sacred Relationship Between Tori and Uke:
In classical Japanese budō, the relationship between Tori and Uke is more important than any single technique.
As Hatsumi Masaaki Sōke has reminded us through his writings and teachings, budō does not live in form alone. Technique without feeling is empty—and that feeling only appears between two people.
Uke is not a victim.
Uke offers sincerity: correct distance, real intent, honest attack.
In doing so, Uke places trust in Tori.
Because of that trust, Tori carries responsibility.
Not to dominate or show strength—but to demonstrate understanding, control, and compassion. True skill is soft, natural, and protects life.
This is why training partners polish each other.
Roles change. Ego fades. Budō grows.
Every bow on the mat is an acknowledgment of this trust.
When Tori and Uke train with respect and awareness, the art remains alive.
This is why the relationship is sacred.
