summer is coming to a close and the last few weeks have been packed! Lots of rolls, reps and drills have been occurring on the green mat all while welcoming new members of our team.

one highlight is that we’ve had the pleasure of sharing the mats with fellow team wiley instructors & 😃 great to see the influence of Jeff’s style manifest itself through the now various generations. It’s always a privilege to be able to learn from your training partners and be able to exchange information!

another important and notable highlight of the summer spoils is that we were fortunate to have the first black belt in all of Saskatchewan host a seminar at our academy! Not only was this an informative seminar filled with great instruction and techniques. It was also a a special day for our head instructor as he was promoted to black belt! 🥋

still a few weeks left of this Alberta summer and our summer schedule before we layer up for the cold! Hope everyone’s had a great time this year 😃

Training with a purpose:

Every individual’s journey in jiujitsu, at some point I believe, is riddled with monotony. The reasons range from many factors such as lack of motivation, decline in perceived progress, repetitive moves/ sequences, chronic fatigue, training conditions etc. This is a reality for all martial arts practitioners and could be seen as another layer of the art. The “cure” to this? Purpose!

This is something we encourage our students to think about on a daily, weekly and even monthly basis. “What is the purpose of my training today?” “What do i seek to gain from this week’s training?”. It is easy to get caught up in the competitive nature of jiujitsu and seek to win the roll, or perhaps tap the higher belt. However, when the focus is on attaining the end result by all means it becomes easy to lose track of the steps to the end result.

That is not to say, it is not a great feat to catch a much more skilled training partner, yes! It is a show of one’s progress. However, a greater feat is to be able to replicate the process! The duality in this focus: in addition to reinforcing your well developed game, your training partner will have to address and work on the defensive aspect that your game may encounter. This is one way individuals get closer to mastering positions.

This can be attained by approaching training with a specific purpose. More specifically, the purpose of whatever position one finds themselves in. For example, is the purpose of training arm bars for 30 minutes to get better at controlling the position? Is it to learn to transition into the position effectively? Perhaps, is it to learn proper breaking mechanics? Pictured above, we see students applying this by focusing on their set ups for inside grips from a wrestling position.

Remember this: the more time you spend focusing on learning one specific aspect of a larger concept, the better your overall understanding of said concept will become.

What will your focus be for this week?

Congratulations to all our competitors yesterday.

Although our academy is not a competition focused school, when any of our students want to test themselves we are always supportive.

It was awesome to witness the progress these guys have made over the past year. For some it was their second competition!

Not only did they showcase their solid jiujitsu skills but did so with poise and great attitude. 🤠
