EQ TRAINER SPOTLIGHT: Foxstone Stable’s Georgia Hunt ✨

1. Where did your love for the sport start?

I was born and raised in Calgary, so Spruce Meadows was a huge draw for family activities. No one in my family had an interest in horses but they all love animals. I was apparently completely obsessed from first sight of a horse while being pushed in my stroller, and started lessons at the age of 5.

2. Who was your biggest inspiration in sport?

As much as I always wanted to be a “rider”, I have always loved the interesting and fulfilling work that takes place to keep a busy facility running. I would say all the knowledgeable and hardworking grooms, trainers and contractors who have been kind enough to share their experiences along the way would be my biggest inspirations.

3. What was the best advice you’ve been given?

There is something to be learned from everyone, and hard work and determination always eventually comes out on top.

4. What qualities do you look for in a young horse?

I fall in love with a great personality first. A horse who loves to learn and work is a fun horse to develop for either the hunter or jumper ring.

5. Give us a profile on one of your exciting horses. Name, age, competition level, length of partnership? What are your goals for this horse?

I think my most notable long term partnership is with my 10 year old mare InfoStar aka Wizzle. We imported her as a very talented 4 year old, and had outstanding results in all the judged young horse classes. She had 1.5 years of surgeries and setbacks as a result of a cracked molar/sinusitis. She caught back up and has been a fun competitive partner for me up to the 1.40m level. She has a HUGE personality and certainly has all of us “peasants” well trained. I would love to jump a few National Grand Prix’s together in the future!

6. What do you feel are the most important foundational for up and coming riders to be focusing on?

I feel like everyone is in such a rush to “jump bigger” that they overlook the basics of horsemanship. I think it is so important to be able to spend time caring for your equine partners, and getting to know them as opposed to just training with them. I have huge respect for students who want to learn as much as they can possibly soak up in the barn. I feel there are very few people nowadays who are capable of every job thrown at you in a long day’s work at the barn.

7. What is one piece of tack or equipment you can not live without?

I am a HUGE fan of pony length rubber reins with the notches. I am also an advocate for safety equipment…you just never know what could happen, so why not try to protect yourself as best you can?

8. Finally - tell us, why do you love Antares?

I love the beautiful classic craftsmanship of Antares products. I am nothing if not well turned out, and love that my beautiful comfortable equipment makes that process easy! It has also stood up to the test of time through many years of competition and various cycles of sales horses.

Sending out a thank you to our next Featured Rider - Brian Morton of Spruce Meadows

Q: Where did your love for the sport start?
A: Really it started with a love of horses and interest in riding, it was from there that the love of the sport grew.

Q: Who was your biggest inspiration in sport?
A: I got a fantastic start from my first trainer Rick Maynard. I really looked up to him growing up, and he was (and is) such a great inspiration.

Q: What was the best advice you’ve been given?
A: Do what’s right for the horse. Focus on the process and let that be what produces the competitive results

Q: What qualities do you look for in a young horse?
A: For physical characteristics I’d say, blood, good balance, quick on their feet, scope and carefulness. I’m fine if a young horse doesn’t have classic technique, because in the end I think there are lots of different ways a horse can jump a course successfully
On the mental/personality side I’d say, friendly, alert and curious.

Q: Give us a profile on one of your exciting horses: Name, age, competition level, length of partnership? What are your goals for this horse?
A: My top horse at the moment is Cadillac (Corlesky G X El Bundy ). I have the great pleasure to ride him for a Spruce Meadows Horse program. He’s 13 and I’ve been riding him for three years. We know each other well and feel like a pretty established partnership at this point. We have a lot of Grand Prix and FEI ranking class results together including winning a three star GP. I think we can be a competitive five star partnership, so solidifying ourselves at that level is my goal for the next year.

Q: What do you feel are the most important foundational skills for up and coming riders to be focusing on?
A: Really the fundamentals - Being extremely solid in position and balance. Being able to communicate effectively with the horse through small movements. Beginning to understand the natural instincts and way of thinking of the horse. Then building all of that into daly habits both on and off the horse.

Q: What is one piece of tack or equipment you can not live without?
A: That’s an easy question - My Antares saddle!

Q: Finally - tell us, why do you love Antares?
A: It’s a great fit for horse and rider. It’s a great blend of a close contact feel with still a good deal of support. The quality of leather is unmatched in my opinion. The brand took a chance on me before I was an established rider and have showed me great support ever since. All in all, that’s what makes the saddles and people involved so special!
