Today, we stand with our 2SLGBTQ+ family with love and support and celebrate International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia—created in 2004 to draw the attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by le***an, gay, bis*xual, transgender, inters*x people and all other people with diverse s*xual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and s*x characteristics.
This year’s International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia theme is “At the Heart of Democracy”, a powerful reminder that the soil of truly democratic societies must be rich in meaningful equity and justice for all, fostering the flourishing of the entire community.
We know that “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights” represents a promise not yet fulfilled—for 2SLGBTQ+ people in Canada and across the world, and for everyone experiencing the suffocating impact on their lives of diverse layers of inequalities, especially today as members of our community stand in the face of increased hatred, now even closer to home, with direct attacks and human rights violations unjustly legitimized by those in positions of power.
