Calgary celebrates Pride beginning at the end of August, but we’re sending our love out to the community now as we kick off the beginning of Pride Month!⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Now more than ever, our communities need love. We need allies. We need people to speak up for those with no voice. We need each other, together, to stand up and shout out loud that we have always been here, we always will be here, and that love is love. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
As your Apollo and Western Cup team, we always say the statement below (chances are good you’ve heard it). But this statement is true not just during this month. It is true always. It’s our commitment to you to provide the kind of community you can be proud to be a part of. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
And so here is our commitment again:⁣
⁣⁣
Apollo has always stood for creating safe spaces for everyone to feel welcome and comfortable. We stand with everyone who shares these values and we are committed to supporting those who are oppressed.⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
Apollo proudly stands in solidarity with the entire 2SLGBTQ+ community. Always, we celebrate you, we welcome you, and we love you for exactly who you are. We continue to commit to educating ourselves, learning where we are falling short and actively striving to do better. We commit to this not just today, but every day.⁣

Happy Pride Month to us all. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜⁣

Today, we stand with our 2SLGBTQ+ family with love and support and celebrate International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia—created in 2004 to draw the attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by le***an, gay, bis*xual, transgender, inters*x people and all other people with diverse s*xual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and s*x characteristics.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

This year’s International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia theme is “At the Heart of Democracy”, a powerful reminder that the soil of truly democratic societies must be rich in meaningful equity and justice for all, fostering the flourishing of the entire community.⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
We know that “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights” represents a promise not yet fulfilled—for 2SLGBTQ+ people in Canada and across the world, and for everyone experiencing the suffocating impact on their lives of diverse layers of inequalities, especially today as members of our community stand in the face of increased hatred, now even closer to home, with direct attacks and human rights violations unjustly legitimized by those in positions of power.⁣

And with that, Western Cup 42 comes to a close. And what a weekend it was.

Thank you athletes, fans, community members, and allies for bringing your A-Game to your sports, your camaraderie to your teams, and your sense of friendly competition to Western Cup. This event wouldn’t be what it is without you. To our sport coordinators, your tireless dedication shone yet again this year and we are so lucky to have you at the helm. Take a well-earned break! To our production crew and performers, thank you for lending your talents and making this weekend so memorable. And to our sponsors, thank you for giving generously to support Western Cup and the communities we serve. We so appreciate your partnership and kindness.

Until next year, everyone. We’re signing off for a beat and we can’t wait to show you what we’ve got in store for you next.

Get home safe and take care. xo
