Intention. One of the key components in adopting and adhering to a wellness or fitness practice is intention. What is your "why" for training? Is it your health? Performance? Do you want to be able to continue your hobbies for a life time? Do you just want to look and feel better? What are the outcomes you hope to achieve? Understanding your "Why" for training and making wellness a priority is the key to success. An experienced and qualified Personal Trainer or Fitness Coach can help make your intention into reality by keeping your practice focused, guide you through the process and make recommendations to make sure you succeed. The Trainers and coaches at Mission Fitness have the experience and methodologies to assist you in your journey and turn your intention into action!

The Squat is arguably the most complete and useful exercise for the lower body. If I only had the time to do one exercise for the lower body I would likely choose the squat. Like the hip hinge, the squat looks simple but it is often performed and practiced incorrectly. Here are a few points to help you in your squatting practice:

1) Keep a neutral spine. No rounding of the back or excessive extension in the lumbar spine.
2) Feet should be set in a manner that places them flat on the floor with the heels shoulder width apart with the foot rotated outward at approx 25-30 degrees.
3) Your tibia (shin) and spine should be running close to parallel with one another when you are in the bottom position.
4) Knees should be "shoved" out during the down phase of the movement in order to achieve proper depth.
5) Desired depth is achieved when the hips are below parallel with the knees
6) Gaze should be forward on the ground approx 4-5 feet in front of your body, with chin slightly tucked. Slightly.
7) The movement starts by "sitting" the hips back first, followed by the knees travelling outwards and forwards to end up in a position slightly ahead of and inline with the 2nd and 3rd toes.

These tips are for a free or body weight squat in a position of best strength. The mechanics of the squat can alter slightly when an external load is being placed on the body and depending on where that load sits in relationship to the mid foot position.

These are just a few tips to help you polish your squatting technique. The best way to ensure your technique is being performed correctly is to have it reviewed and corrected by a trained and experienced professional!

The Hip Hinge is a fundamental movement in both activities of daily living as well as during training. This movement pattern may look simple but is commonly performed incorrectly. To correctly perform the hip hinge there are a few points that must be considered.

1) The spine must remain neutral. Rounding of the back or excessive extension can put the spine at risk while completing this movement under load.

2) The knees must remain fixed in a vertical position with slight flexion of the knees being acceptable.

3) An important differentiation between the squat and the hip hinge is that during the hip hinge the hips are travelling back but not down.

Stay tuned to Mission Fitness for upcoming reviews on several other fundamental movements!
