THIS!!
Hockey development needs a reset.
Somewhere along the way, development became more about politics, status, social media clips, and chasing the “best” team logo than actually becoming a better player.
Too many kids are being told they need to jump from team to team, spend thousands on spring hockey, attend every showcase, and chase hype just to “keep up.” Parents are draining their savings. Players are burning themselves out. And for what? A lot of players are getting pushed into environments that look good on paper but do very little for their actual growth.
Real development isn’t about wearing the trendiest gear.
It isn’t about posting fancy training videos every day.
It isn’t about who can spend the most money.
Real development is showing up every day and getting better.
It’s having coaches who actually teach instead of tearing players down.
It’s being in an environment where mistakes are part of learning.
It’s working on skating, IQ, shooting, passing, confidence, and habits that translate when the lights come on.
It’s loving the game enough to trust the process.
Some players leave great situations because they think the grass is greener somewhere else. Others get overlooked because they aren’t the biggest, flashiest, or most connected player in the room. Meanwhile, there are hardworking kids quietly improving every single day, and those are usually the ones who last.
Hockey should be about development first. Not politics. Not ego. Not trends.
We need more honest coaching.
More affordable opportunities.
More patience with young athletes.
And more focus on long-term growth instead of short-term hype.
Every player develops at a different pace. Some break out at 12. Some break out at 18. Some don’t hit their stride until junior, college, or even pro hockey.
Your path doesn’t need to look like everyone else’s.
Keep working. Keep learning. Keep loving the game.
Development will always matter more than hype. 🏒
