How to chip a pass over the defence: the ball has to rise fast, land early, and stop asking your striker to sprint 40 yards.
A lofted pass over the back line isn't a hopeful punt. It's a short, steep ball that clears the last defender's head and drops into the space behind him — usually only 15 to 20 yards of flight. If your striker has to chase it to the goalkeeper, you hit it too far.
The technique is the opposite of a driven pass. Plant your standing foot beside the ball, not in front of it. Lean your upper body back. Strike underneath the ball with the top of your boot near the toes, and stop the follow-through early. A short, sharp stab lifts it. A long, sweeping swing drives it flat into the defender's shins.
The hard part is the timing, not the strike. The ball should leave your foot while the runner is still level with the last defender. If you wait to see him free, you're late.
