Hillendale Perennials

Hillendale Perennials Hillendale Perennials is a specialty plant nursery located in Nova Scotia, Canada on the Truro Road; 5 km south of downtown Truro . from various locations.

We produce landscape perennials, potted herbs and salad greens, & decorative Christmas Products. Hillendale Perennials is a landscape plant nursery specializing in container grown perennials (and potted herbs and salad greens). We are a retail production operation; hence all of the plants that we sell directly to our gardening customers are grown at our own farm which is located 5 km south of Trur

o, NS on the Truro Road. We do much of our own propagation. We also bring in seed and other propagation materials (crown divisions, rooted cuttings, etc.) We are constantly looking for new, hardy perennials and we offer perennials, both native to North America, and native to areas as far away as Siberia! We are located in a small inland valley which has colder winters (Zone 4b/5a) than Truro (Zone 5a/5b). We concentrate on the production of hardy perennials, which are in addition to being grown outdoors nine months of the year, are overwintered in unheated cold frames from early December to late March. We evaluate new varieties in our display gardens for performance and winter hardiness. We have a reputation for growing large, well established hardy plants which perform extraordinary well for our customers. We basically operate on a 2 year cycle. If you were to visit our nursery each week from early May to mid-August, over 2 seasons, you would be able to see most of the varieties that we produce for sale. At any given time there are between 150 to 350 perennial varieties typically available. Most are produced in large 3L, 4L and 6L nursery containers and are usually at least a growing season old and often 2 or 3 years old. The farm also produces other container-grown products, cut daffodils and decorative Christmas products (wreaths, drop swags, and planters). Hillendale Perennials sells perennials from the first of May to mid August. We sell at the Truro Farmers’ Market on Saturdays from 8:00am to 1:00pm, and also at our retail nursery in Hilden. We also do a limited number of perennial border designs and provide the plants for these projects. Landscapers, landscape architects, towns, cities, universities, etc. also purchase our perennials (at retail prices; we do not sell at wholesale prices). Our customer base at our nursery in Hilden comes from mainland Nova Scotia and southern New Brunswick.

Japanese Primrose (Primula japonica) - This hardy Primrose has white (actually very, very, light coloured shell pink) flowers, with yellow eyes. This selection originally came from a garden in Central NS; initially planted around 75 years ago, and hence much hardier than the typical Primula japonica, after dozens of generations of self-seeding and self-selecting for hardiness . Supply limited; we have a few available today.

CHIVES! Sometimes things happen that you can't fully explain. A lot of gardeners lost their chives this past winter. Well, they actually didn't 'lose' them, as in 'misplaced' them; their plants died. We have had many customers, visiting our Nursery looking for chive plant replacements, telling us that their 5, 10, 20 year old chive plants didn't survive the Winter. How can that happen. Chives plants are rugged and indestructible; why, you can repeatably drive your car over them and they keep coming back year after year. I suspect that it might be related to the 2 past summers of severe drought, or maybe, just maybe The Chive Terminator from Planet Allium is the culprit. Regardless, Hillendale Perennials has lots of pots of chives; around 100 pots available at this time. (Pots are 7" diameter, only $7 ea. and they are immediately ready for harvesting. (We also have pots of garlic chives.) Photo: One of our pots of chives this morning. That's the end of this Post; but I'LL BE BACK, or you can visit us today at our Nursery; open 12noon to 4pm.

TAKING THE HORROR OUT OF HORTICULTURE (Groundcover perennials that won't terrorize you and your garden.) NOTE: Never enter a sunflower field after dark, on a leap year, during a full moon. (This has nothing to do with this post; just saying....). FIVE PERENNIALS USED AS GROUND COVERS BUT ARE WELL BEHAVED: Photo #2 - 'Purple Dragon' Lamium (most Lamium cultivars are well behaved; a cultivar called 'Chequers' is not; it self seeds and jumps around the garden.). 'Purple Dragon' has rose-pink flowers; Photo #3 - 'Striatum' Cranesbill - light pink flowers, long blooming. Photo #4 - 'Silver Brocade' Artemisia - a cultivar of Beach Wormwood; Photo #5 - 'Dimity' Persicaria; sometimes incorrectly listed as 'Superba' Persicaria, which is the cultivar name of another Persicaria species; Photo #6 - Bigroot Cranesbill. All but 'Striatum' are deer resistant. 'Silver Brocade' prefers full sun; 'Purple Dragon' prefers light to medium shade, and the remaining three (''Dimity', 'Striatum', and Bigroot) will grow in full sun or part shade, We presently have all 5 available; OPEN today, Wednesday, June 3, from 12noon to 4pm.

DARN; IT WAS TOO-GOOD-TO-BE-TRUE! – Hillendale Perennials' Secretive April 1 Production, Marketing and It’s Too Good-To-Be-True-Department developed some new daylily varieties that produce 20 'flower colours/cultivars' on each plant. The rationale for doing this was that since many plantaholic gardeners would like to have at least 100 daylily cultivars in their gardens, but don't have the space; we thought that if we could develop plants, each with 20 'flower colours/cultivars' per plant, than we would have solved that monumental problem. This research has, however, hit a stumbling block. For some unknown reason these plants only seem to flower here at Hillendale Perennials. Anywhere else; no flowers develop, and since they also have no leaves; the plants are short lived and not perennial. Hence, they don’t meet Hillendale Perennials' business model; ie PERENNIALS! Note: we do presently have ‘perennial’ daylilies, including ‘Vegas Jackpot’ and 'Double Pardon Me' (photos 1 and 2; respectively).

PINK-FLOWERED MALTESE CROSS -Maltese Cross (Lychnis chalcedonica) has been grown in European gardens for centuries. The species usually has red (orange-red to scarlet-red) flowers, and this is the flower colour that most gardeners are familiar with. There are, however; both pink (salmon-pink) and white colour forms. We grow the salmon-pink form; the cultivar ‘Carnea’. ‘Carnea’ is sometimes listed by other ‘cultivar’ names including: ‘Dusky Pink’, ‘Dusky Salmon’, and ‘Pinkie’. Maltese Cross has historically been very popular in Cottage Gardens, and has become very popular in recent years because it is one of the best flowering perennials for attracting Hummingbirds. Maltese Cross likes full sun, grows to around 3-4 feet, is long blooming, and is hardy to Canadian Hardiness Zone 4. Much to the delight of all the Hummingbirds, we presently have a good supply of both ‘Carnea’, and the red-flowered species available.
