Sexual activity is happening right now on Georgian Bay!
Not just Georgian Bay actually, but on a lot of waterbodies throughout much of Ontario. Muskie season doesn't open anywhere in Ontario until June because muskie populations here are all sustained by natural reproduction rather than stocking, and spawning occurs throughout May. In a late spring like we've had this year, water temperatures associated with muskies spawning may persist into June, so if you're planning to fish in areas of Ontario where the season opens in early June, be mindful of water temperatures and try not to target areas where water temperatures still haven't reached 60s Fahrenheit (15 Celsius) and don't disturb the muskies while they "get it on". 😉
If you know areas where muskies spawn, it may even be helpful to resist the urge to move your boat around in very shallow water to observe them, as silt kicked up by your electric motor may suffocate muskie eggs to reduce spawning success.
While we're on the topic of muskies having s*x, here's a photo to help you tell the difference between males and females. The keyhole-shaped urogenital region of the muskie on the left is that of a male, while the more pear-shaped urogenital region of the muskie on the right is that of a female.
