Potato Barrel Classic

Potato Barrel Classic An annual Carleton County basketball tournament tradition, uniting community at CNHS since 1996.

In November 1995, during the Carleton North Ladies Fall Classic, Peter DeMerchant proposed organizing a combined girls’ and boys’ basketball tournament, inspired by events like the Capital City Classic in Fredericton, Coal Bowl in Cape Breton, and Dairytown Classic in Sussex. After initial discussions with Iain Dunlop, Darrell Turnball, Peter DeMerchant and Russell Cook, they decided to explore th

e idea further. They studied the Coal Bowl and Dairytown tournaments, noting their community involvement and success. Iain attended the Coal Bowl in Cape Breton, and Darrell attended the Dairytown in Sussex. The Dairytown model stood out for its strong community collaboration and detailed organization. The event included various committees, community engagement, and celebratory ceremonies. Inspired by Dairytown, they decided to replicate its structure for their own tournament. With Russell’s support, they identified local committee members and followed Peter McAleenan’s advice to invite top teams. By the third year, leading teams from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI, and Maine participated. The tournament was named the Potato Barrel Classic after a naming contest won by Emily DeMerchant of Bristol Elementary. Since its beginning it has been a celebrated high school basketball event in New Brunswick.
