We’re excited to introduce a new Hockey Brandon series, “Where Are They Now?” We’re catching up with former Hockey Brandon players to hear their favourite memories, where hockey took them and where life has taken them since. First up, let’s hear what Devon LeBlanc had to say about his time in Minor Hockey.
From Atom through AAA, Devon LeBlanc grew up playing Brandon Minor Hockey. Some of his best memories came during his AAA years, when many of his teammates were also classmates and hockey became as much about the friendships as the games.
One game still gets talked about today: a seven-overtime Tournament of Champions game against the older Wheat Kings team. Devon’s team eventually lost, but not before multiple floods and a game that delayed the tournament schedule.
Devon credits Cam Plante for organizing breakfast clubs and extra training opportunities, something he says he didn’t fully appreciate until later. He also remembers Bob Neville, the Red Deer Rebels scout who ultimately drafted him.
After minor hockey, Devon played four years in the WHL and half a season professionally in the CHL before leaving the game to pursue a career in policing.
Today, Devon lives in Brandon and is a Sergeant with the Crime Reduction and Enforcement Unit for the Manitoba First Nations Police, alongside his nine-year-old police dog, Ceto.
His advice to today’s Hockey Brandon players:
“Enjoy every minute you get at the rink because someday you will truly miss being with all your friends in the dressing rooms and hotels.”
Hockey taught Devon work ethic, the importance of being on time and what it means to be part of a team. And according to Devon, his old teammates would probably remember how much he liked messing around to get a laugh, even if it occasionally got him into trouble!
From minor hockey in Brandon to the WHL and beyond, Devon’s story is a great reminder that the lessons and friendships from the rink can stay with you long after the final buzzer. 🏒
