Growing up I was not into competitive sports at a rep level but I did participate in many sports including figure skating, badminton, squash, field hockey. I was miffed when I did not make the basketball team in middle school. I did a lot of walking especially in high school and university. One of my roomates from university kept me active with racket sports and she introduced me to xcountry skiing.
Fast forward decades later and I’m flipping thru the parks and rec book and noticed classes in Urban Poling. I had never heard of it but was intrigued because it was a year round activity that helped maintain conditioning for xcountry skiing. So I signed up for 6 classes, bought a set of poles from the instructor and I was off. Even though it was a form of exercise I loved, I could not seem to develop the habit of doing it likely because of the age of my kids and the demands of school schedules.
In 2014 I read an article in a magazine about Urban Poling and becoming an instructor. I was immediately interested and searched the link for the next available course and prayed there would be one in my area in the near future. I was excited to find a course at a time and location that was perfect for me so I signed up.
It is one of the best decisions I ever made. Not only did the training teach me of all the benefits and refine my technique but I realized it was something I could teach others and develop a part time business from it.
