MONDAY MINDSET

Gymnastics can’t be my whole life. To be great in the gym, I have to have fun, rest and recover outside of it.

How did it go last week following your schedule?

Did it seem weird that we asked you to plan your fun free time before you planned your meals, homework and bedtime?

An important lesson to learn early on, is that life isn’t just about getting things done and being productive.

People don’t look back on their life in old age and wish they got more done.

They wish they would have enjoyed the life that they had more.

The people. The experiences. And just having fun.

And the more you rest your brain and your body, the more you will have to give for quality practice time in the gym.

So we start by making time for fun.

Time for friends.

Time for hobbies.

Time to just veg out and relax.

So go back through your calendar this week and adjust your plans.

Add in time every day for fun, rest and relaxation.

You can either plan out what you want to do during that time.

Or make a list of things that are fun and relaxing so you can pull it out and do what feels good in the moment.

But remember, even in your free time, what feels good in the moment may not always be what you need the most.

Disney+, scrolling social media and staring at a screen can feel great.

But it might not be the mental and emotional rest you really need.

Consider talking to a friend, doing something outdoors or reading a book sometimes too.

See if you can get some quality rest time in each day and see how that affects your week.

MONDAY MINDSET

If I want to reach my goals and dreams in gymnastics, I am going to have to make decisions ahead of time and follow them instead of just doing what feels good in the moment.

Gymnastics is a sport that usually takes a lot of your time.

Between hours in the gym, school and homework, it can feel like there really isn’t time to get it all done and have any kind of a life outside of the gym.

Especially for high level gymnasts.
And while this does require that you get better at managing your time than the average kid, it doesn’t mean that you can’t fit it all in.

The secret comes into learning some good tools to organize your time, and then to use the same mind management tools you learn in the gym to manage your brain so you can follow it.

The first tool is to make decisions about how you want to spend your time ahead of time.

Aside from the priority of keeping you safe, your primary brain also cares a lot about doing what feels good in the moment.

But when it comes to managing your time, what feels good in the moment usually won’t feel good later.

When you plan, and make decisions about how you are going to spend your time ahead of time, your primary brain stays out of the way.

And your higher brain steps in, helping you think about things in terms of your dreams and goals.

So this month we are going to start by planning our time out.

Get out a weekly calendar (digital or paper), and put in practice, school, and any other things that you do every week.

Now add in time EVERY DAY to rest, recover and have fun.

Then add in mealtimes, bedtime and wake up time.

Next add in when you will do your homework and any chores.

This first week will just be getting an idea.

Do your best to follow your plan and gather lots of information about how it goes.
