How to Sit with Your Emotions + Giveaway Announcement!

Sitting with your emotions can be the best way to process emotions instead of suppressing them through drinking, smoking, scrolling, etc. By sitting with and witnessing the sensations in your body, you allow your bodyโ€™s natural process to unfold. This will take practice, so please have compassion for yourself if this is new to you.

๐‡๐จ๐ฐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐’๐ข๐ญ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐˜๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐„๐ฆ๐จ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ

I recommend practicing this process often, even when you arenโ€™t feeling intense emotions. It can be very difficult to start this practice if you wait until you feel overwhelmed. You can do this anytime you have a few minutes.

Find a safe space where you can be alone and set a timer for 5-10 minutes.

Sit or lie down in a position that feels comfortable.

Place your hand over your chest and bring your focus to the space at the center of your chest, breathing slowly and gently into this space. Focus on deepening your inhale through your nose and slowly releasing through your mouth

Notice any sensations that arise. Notice where you feel tightness or temperature shifts.

Get curious about what is coming up. If any thoughts come up arise, come back to your breath.

If your body wants to release in any way through tears, shaking, rocking, etc., follow those urges. Your body may express in ways that seem weird or abnormal - this is perfectly normal. Your body knows how to release, you just need to give it permission to do so.

Continue to bring your awareness to these sensations while breathing slowly and deeply. Notice how the sensations change as you place your awareness on them. Emotions typically take 90 seconds before they change and dissipate, so trust that it wonโ€™t last forever.

When your timer goes off, allow yourself to complete the process by taking 3 deep breaths with a powerful exhale.

Be gentle and speak kindly to yourself. Remember: sitting with your emotions is a skill that is developed with time. Practicing often will help you to strengthen this skill for when you really need it.

Breathwork doesnโ€™t have to be intense and scary - you get to go slow and at your own pace.

Every time I teach breathwork, there is always someone who is surprised at the gentleness of how I teach. Many breathwork styles are powerful and transformative with big emotional releases, but can also be overwhelming.

One thing Iโ€™ve learned in the 4 years of practicing breathwork is that the BIG releases arenโ€™t always easy to integrate into your daily life. Expanding your nervous system past your natural capacity might leave you feeling ungrounded and afraid of the practice - and thatโ€™s the last thing I want you to experience.

I believe in soaking up the beauty in going slowly, of gently adding more intensity and constantly checking in with how youโ€™re feeling.

By slowing down first and going at your bodyโ€™s pacing, you get to deepen your relationship with your body and become more attuned to its whispers.

If you want to have a huge release in a breathwork session, then you can go for it! Iโ€™m here to hold space for your transformationโ€ฆ.but it isnโ€™t mandatory. If you feel safer by going slower, by taking baby steps and releasing bit by bit, then you get to do that too.

Itโ€™s been a hot minute since I introduced myself in this space, so here we go!

Hi! Iโ€™m Whitney. I live at the foot of the Rocky Mountains near Black Diamond, Alberta with my wonderful partner, dog, & 4(yesโ€ฆ4) cats.

I have an incredible passion for teaching breathwork to as many people as possible. I truly believe that if more people could experience this powerful modality, they could begin to integrate and heal from years, even decades, of suppressed emotion.

I first discovered breathwork in 2019 after sending a desperate prayer to the Universe. For 10 years, I had been struggling with binge eating disorder, bulimia, and substance addictions. I was such an expert at hiding my emotions and struggles that no one in my life knew. I would walk around my daily life wearing the mask of โ€œIโ€™m strong, I can handle anything, Iโ€™ve got thisโ€....But deep down I was crippled with anxiety, a pain that gnawed at my insides, threatening to eat me alive.

As I began to practice breathwork regularly, I accessed deeply hidden emotions that I had suppressed for many years. I cried, I yelled, I shook - everything my body needed to finally let go.

After a few years of integrating breathwork into my daily life, I felt ready to step into my soulโ€™s calling of teaching it. Itโ€™s become my obsession to help people through the same transformation that I experienced in 2019: to connect to your emotions, to integrate your whole self, simply through conscious breathing.

Now, I am incredibly honored to offer breathwork in many different ways:

There is power in your emotions.

Breathwork can tap you into their incredible fire.

I grew up having no idea what to do with intense emotions - so I would numb, drown, and suffocate them...but they would bubble up in toxic ways.

What does emotional expression look like in a breathwork session?
For me, it can look like stomping my feet, yelling, crying, moving, and releasing without restriction. I would have been terrified to do this alone, but by having space held for me by a loving and supportive facilitator, I can feel safe to explore.

I've become finely attuned to how different emotions feel in my body. I can sense when they arrive and what theyโ€™re communicating.

Weโ€™re all just little children in adult bodies.

When youโ€™re criticizing, judging, and pushing yourself to do and be more - remember who youโ€™re talking to.

Inside you is a little child with needs, wants, and desires - have you listened to them lately?

They want to play, enjoy life, feel loved and accepted, laugh and explore - have you given them the chance?

Everytime you ignore that desire - youโ€™re telling that little child no.

If itโ€™s been awhile since youโ€™ve connected to them, it might feel odd to think about. Thatโ€™s OK - keep an open mind.

Before the world told you who to be, how to behave, what to look like, how to be loved - you were innocent and full of love.

Wanna know a little secret?

You still are.

No matter how distant you feel from that childlike innocence - itโ€™s still within you. Your inner child still aches to be loved and feel safe.

Thereโ€™s many ways you can begin to heal the relationship with your inner child. Combining inner child work with breathwork has been pivotal in my personal healing journey.

Through the practice of deeply connecting with my emotions during breathwork, Iโ€™ve reopened that communication channel that allows me to experience the childlike play and innocence.

From this place, life is a lot easier.

When my inner child's needs are met, stress doesnโ€™t get to me as much. Other peopleโ€™s actions donโ€™t throw me into an emotional outburst as intensely as they used to. I donโ€™t push myself to work so hard or be someone Iโ€™m not - because Iโ€™ve developed that loving relationship with that sweet little girl inside.

Iโ€™ve discovered that when I tell myself Iโ€™m not enough - Iโ€™m telling her that sheโ€™s not enough. And that breaks my heart.

This is one of the many ways Iโ€™ve helped my clients deepen their healing through breathwork, and Iโ€™d love to guide you too.
