The Barrie Curling Club is a not-for profit 7-sheet facility at 175 Essa Road in Barrie, Ontario. The club schedules 40 hours of curling per week between 15 leagues from Monday to Friday and Sunday. In addition the club organizes 10 bonspiels, primarily on Saturdays but also over weekends. The ice is consistently rented to local business and residents who organize daytime curling outings to full weekend bonspiels. In addition the club has a lounge, restaurant, boardroom and large main level area available for rental by residents and businesses. In the summer the ice surface is a concrete floor that can have several purposes. For example, in 2013, the Barrie Curling Club hosted the South Simcoe Rebel Rollers (roller derby league) to over 300 spectators on three occasions.

What kids take from curling can stay with them for years.

Madeleine Dupont is back for Episode 5 of More Than Curling, sharing what mattered most to her when she started playing as a kid.

Want better ice this season? Help us keep it clean. 🥌

The ice crew can only do so much. A few simple habits from everyone using the ice can make a big difference:

🥌 Give your gripper a quick check. - If it’s cracked, worn smooth, or leaving little black bits behind, it’s probably time for a new one.

🥌 Keep your curling shoes clean. - Dirt, salt and grit can make their way onto the sheet faster than you think.

🥌 Clean your broom head.- Hair, dust and lint build up over time, and eventually some of that ends up on the ice.

🥌 Keep food and drinks off the ice. - Spills and crumbs are much easier to prevent than deal with afterward.

🥌 See something on the ice? Pick it up. - One tiny piece of debris can be enough to affect a rock.

🥌 Keep outdoor shoes away from the ice. - Parking lot grit and hallway dirt do not need to make it any farther.

🥌 Watch for loose fibres. - Towels, fleece and other gear can shed more than you realize.

🥌 Do a quick gear check before your first draw. - Shoes, broom head and gripper. Sixty seconds now can save everyone a headache later.

Clean gear. Clean ice. Better curling.

Good ice doesn’t happen by accident. 🥌

We asked Bryan what advice he’d give someone learning how to make curling ice.

His answer was simple: don’t rush it.

Take your time, understand the process, and let each step do its job.

There’s a lot more that goes into good curling ice than most people ever see.

Competition starts somewhere.

Jill Brothers of Team Black remembers how curling went from something she tried as a kid to something she wanted to keep chasing.

That’s why the first chance to play matters. Kids don’t need to know what they want from curling before they step on the ice. They get to find that out for themselves.
