Being so consumed by your outcome goal wont allow you to focus on the things that will actually get you there.

What's the saying? Your putting the cart before the horse

Imagine you have a goal to take a vacation.

First you need to figure out where you're going, how you're getting there, if you can afford it etc.

Before you reach your destination there are a myriad of steps you need to take to get there.

Don't fall for cheap tricks or fad diets.

Create healthy sustainable habits that last forever and you'll not only reach your goals but also enjoy the process.

Stop focusing solely on weight loss when you go to the gym.

I talk alot about weight loss because I have had and do have a lot of clients that come to me primarily to lose weight.

I would never force someone to have a goal they dont want for themselves.
But i've noticed, especially for women, that the fitness industry and gyms are targeted mostly for weight loss.

Which makes a lot of people, especially beginners, think that gyms are a place to try to burn calories and everything you do there should be in service to that.

The gym shouldnt be viewed as a place to just lose weight. It's about building confidence, gaining new strength and so much more.

And when you focus on your strength and building a better relationship with food, weight loss is usually the result anyway.

I honestly think most people in the gym should have goals other than weight loss. Weight loss if you so choose, should only be for a short period of time before your back to focusing on other goals.

If you're sick of feeling like your only goal should be to burn calories when you're at the gym, DM me for coaching and I can show you how much the gym has to offer!

So you're trying to lose some body fat?

Have you figured out your maintenance calories to determine a reasonable deficit? Do you know how much weight per week you should be losing?

These questions are not only imperative to your success but imperative to the sustainability of your plan as well.

This is why I take issue with calorie tracker apps like noom and my fitness pal. Not to say these apps are bad by any means.

In fact I've been using them myself for the past 10 years.

However when most people are setting up their deficit it will ask them how much they want to lose per week?

So they choose 2 lb/week! Why not right?

Most apps won't allow you to drop below 1200 calories but with a loss of 2 lb a week your calories may even drop below that. Especially for women

So you're set at an extremely low calorie count of 1200. Are you going to make progress off of this? 100%.

How long is that really going to last for! 4 weeks? Maybe 6?

The reason you're not successful is not because your metabolism is broken or because you have no willpower. And its certainly not because counting calories "doesn't work"

You're not successful because your deficit is unsustainable! And you're setting unrealistic standards for how much you should be losing.

Want to know the "secrets" to successful fat loss? Maintain a sustainable deficit and a slow rate of loss.

A lot of people don't understand the difference between weight loss and fat loss!

They think scale going up I do good, scale going down I do bad.

That's extremely black and white way of thinking!

Understand that your weight is going to fluctuate for a variety of reasons including a loss or gain in:
- body fluid
- lean mass
- body fat

Additionally your body is going to hold weight for a variety of reasons as well including:
- sodium and carbs increasing water rendition
- stress increasing cortisol (which will increase fluid retention)
- when and how you weigh you weigh yourself!

However if your calories are in check the fluctuations are most likely not happening from fat gain!

This is why you shouldn't tie so much emotion to the scale! Write down the number as just data and move on.

Have trust in the process and have patience most importantly

This girl is killin it! 💪🎉

Lola is one of those clients that goes above and beyond. One of my main goals with Lola was to not just give her challenging workouts but to help educate her on the fundamentals of training and nutrition. And she eats up every minute of it! Always wanting to learn and grow!

With a client so young we're not just focused on getting the perfect "summer body" rather we focus on developing lifelong habits that she can use well after we have reached her goal.

Lola has trust in my knowledge but knows this isn't a dictatorship. We work together to cultivate an environment where she can reach her goals sustainably.

"Evan has singlehandedly changed my life.  When I decided to begin working out, lifting weights and become healthier, I had no idea where to start. I was timid to begin by myself, so I began doing my research and someone told me they knew someone great!

I decided get in contact with Evan and start my journey. Since then I have been seeing Evan for 3 times a week for about 8-9 months. I never miss a workout. He promotes all the right things, always encourages me to eat well and enough, and makes small lifestyle changes instead of focusing on my weight loss.

I lost 30 pounds, gained incredible strength and confidence, and I always give Evan the credit. I have recommended him to many of my close friends and family, some of whom have become his clients as well... and they love it!"

I think cheat meals are a great way to set yourself up for failure!

Firstly, they imply you're doing something that you shouldn't be. Just because you ate a certain food or went over your calories doesn't mean you've done anything bad. However cheat meals can often lead to guilt due to an all-or-nothing approach.

Secondly, they imply that there are bad foods or foods that you should be avoiding. There are no such thing as "bad foods". Of course You should be eating a well balanced diet but just because chips or ice cream are minimal in any actual nutrients, doesn't make them bad. Obviously if you're only eating a diet of chips and ice cream things are not going to go well for you. But enjoying food you like throughout the week shouldn't feel like you're cheating.

Thirdly, they only leave you wanting more. Once you've had a big cheat meal, the only thing you're thinking of is that next big cheat meal. This leads to not actually enjoying any of the process and only looking to the next relief. Yes, there should be some sacrifice but if you're only looking forward to your next "cheat meal" during your fat loss phase then you've got a problem.

The more you resist having a couple cookies be bigger chance you'll cave and eat the whole box.

Just have some cookies and move on.

🚨 Warning! Certified Badass right here!

As trainers and fitness coaches, we all want clients like Kris! Not only is she consistent and open minded, especially when things get tough but she exceeds my expectations on a weekly basis.

It's not just about delivering a plan and telling someone how many calories to eat. We work as a team so that she can genuinely understand the principles and fundamentals of training and nutrition.

Kris says it better than I ever could!

"Evan is so much fun to train with. He’s my biggest cheerleader and he gets as excited about milestones as I do."

"He has a tonne of knowledge about training and diet and he also has lots of patience when I’m having a “moment” "

"Evan has a way of putting everything into perspective for me and it really helps me to keep going. He really cares about his clients and it shows."

"There are so many things I’ve learned from my time with Evan, but I think the biggest thing is to trust the process (and him lol) and that is doesn’t need to be complicated. Whether it’s diet or strength training, being consistent pays off big. And it doesn’t matter how long it may take to get to my goals, I know I can get there!"

"I feel stronger and healthier than I’ve even been, both mentally and physically and Evan has been such a big part of that"

What to be a badass like Kris? Message me and take control of your health and fitness.

How much are you trying to take on? There's only so much you can juggle before things come crashing down!

We see it all the time as coaches. Clients want to lose weight, gain muscle, have more energy, run a 5k and increase mobility. Not to say these goals aren't good in and of themselves. But trying to do everything at once is just setting yourself up for failure.

Think of it like learning a language. Trying to learn French while throwing Spanish into the mix will just make things more confusing. This doesn't mean that you can't learn Spanish. Just learn your French first.

Another issue I see is clients trying to take on too many new things at once! It can seem overwhelming when first starting fitness. I see people all the time trying to train 3 to 5 days a week, do cardio everyday, and slash their calories to a ridiculously unsustainable amount. All while trying to reduce their sugar and intake more fruits and vegetables. Of course this is overwhelming, that would seem impossible for a person just starting out.

Start with just one or two things and slowly add on once you have those things dialed in . My best recommendation would be to train 3 to 4 days a week (whatever is sustainable for you) and begin tracking your calories if you don't do so already. Once you have those things locked in, add one or two more. Maybe adding cardio or trying to increase protein intake?

Stop confusing yourself! You don't need to cut out all sugar, use waist trainers or drink fit tea's. You just need to be more consistent with the stuff that matters.

It's hard to describe in words what it's like to work with Melanie. She has so much to offer sometimes I think I should be paying her. I've honestly learned so much through our time together! Which just goes to show as much as I try to help my clients grow they are doing the same for me. Maybe without realizing it.

Melanie is the epitome of an ideal client. She is consistent, asks questions and is willing to try new things even if they might seem a little scary. The new found love that I see Melanie have for the gym is the reason why I do what I do. To no longer view the gym a place of punishment but of growth.

Melanie, you are the most badass with sass I've ever met and I hope you never change!
