πŸ† TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS! πŸ†

The Navy Vets are coming home from Ayr as Eli Palfreyman Memorial Tournament Champions after a 4-1 victory over Pittsburgh Penguins Elite in tonight’s final!

The Vets’ penalty kill set the tone early, killing off three Pittsburgh power plays in the opening period with Ian Kubelka standing tall between the pipes to send the game into the first intermission scoreless.

Woodstock struck first 3:12 into the second when Cole Shoup finished off a play set up by Xander Zanier to make it 1-0.

Pittsburgh answered later in the period to send the teams into the third tied 1-1.

Then the Vets went to work.

Starting the third on the power play, Joshua Jodoin ripped a shot home from the slot to put Woodstock back in front.

Moments later, Jordan Vanderlip capitalized on a turnover in the Pittsburgh zone to make it 3-1.

From there, the Vets defended the lead well and Kubelka continued his strong night in goal before Xander Zanier sealed it with an empty-netter with under two minutes remaining.

4-1 FINAL. TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS. πŸ†

A tremendous way to finish an excellent four days of hockey for our group.

More importantly, we want to thank the Ayr Centennials organization, everyone who helped make this weekend possible, and all of the participating teams for putting on a first-class event.

We were honored to be part of a tournament that brings the hockey community together in memory of Eli and celebrates a legacy that continues to mean so much to so many.

Thank you, Ayr. It was a great weekend. ❀️

The Centennials faced off against the Brantford Titans Sunday afternoon in the second Consolation game.
Ayr opened the scoring 14:36 into the game. Biser from the left point sent it down the boards to Marik in the corner. He carried to the hashmarks and fired a pass across to Mitchell at the top of the right circle. He carried to the dot before wristing it in. Brantford got the equalizer 30 seconds later when Tamburro went behind his net to ring it around the boards but the puck was picked up by a Titan and fired into the open net. A powerplay with 50 seconds remaining gave the Titans the lead. 2-1 after 20.
Brantford stretched their lead to two 49 seconds into the third. The Cens drew to within one at the 1:41 mark. On a crazy goal mouth scramble it was Tristan Hill who was the last one to get his stick on the puck as he banged it in the open side. Assists went to Craig and Mitchell. Another powerplay by the Titans restored the two goal spread at 4:47. Again the Cens battled back cashing in on the powerplay with 6:10 left in the second. Henneberry from the left corner sent it to Blackburn in the high slot. He dished it off to Atkinson at the inside edge of the right circle and he sent it home with a nifty backhander. 4-3 after 40.
The Titans regained the two goal cushion scoring 14 seconds into the final frame. The teams continued to trade goals as the Cens again got within one at the 3:58 mark. Scriven from the top of the left circle found Atkinson as he entered the zone on the right side. He blasted a low shot on from the top of the left circle. Hill, who has been paying the price for being on the blue paint all tournament long, was there again to bang home the rebound for his second of the evening. A shot from mid point with 1:46 on the clock found the back of the net once again putting the Cens down by two for the fourth time. Tamburro was pulled for the extra attacker with 1:33 remaining and Brantford took a penalty 5 seconds later. Then with :35 to play anoyher Titans penalty made it a 6 on 3. Ayr drew to within one for the last time on the powerplay with 25 seconds on the clock. Cunningham-Louks over to Atkinson . His shot from the right dot went into the crowd in front and Henneberry was able to bang it home. But the Cens ran out of time and despite out shooting their opponents 63-33 they fell 6-5.
The intensity of the games played in this tournament is a great tribute to Eli. Its also a great tune up for the regular season which starts this Thursday (10th) at 7:00 when the Cens will host the Pelham Panthers. One thing the Cens showed throughout the weekend is there is no quit in this team. That's a good indication we're in for a season of jr hockey worth watching.
