The mermaid stretch helps create length through the sides of the body, encourages better spinal mobility, and can help improve the way your ribs expand as you breathe. It's a great movement for anyone who spends long periods sitting, feels stiff through their back or waist, or simply wants to move with a little more ease and freedom. πŸŒΏπŸ™Œ

A few things to keep in mind:
- Sit tall and imagine lengthening through the crown of your head
- Reach through your fingertips as you bend to create space through the side body
- Keep both sit bones grounded as much as possible
- Focus on opening the ribs rather than collapsing into the stretch
- Move slowly and coordinate your breath with the movement
- Perform both sides to help maintain balance and symmetry

The biggest thing to remember is that this movement isn't about how far you can stretch 🀍

Have you ever wondered what it actually means to "engage your core"? πŸ€”

Whether you're a parent trying to keep up with your kids, an athlete looking to improve performance, or someone simply wanting to move with less pain, learning how to properly use your core can make a huge difference.

At Bijoy's Physio & Pilates, we help our clients understand what their deep core muscles do, how to activate them, and how to use them during exercise and everyday activities.

πŸ’‘ Quick Core Tip:
When engaging your core, your stomach shouldn't dome or create a "bread loaf" appearance. One common mistake is allowing the ribs to flare out. Instead, try making a long "tsssssss" sound as you slowly breathe out and think about gently drawing your ribs down. This can help activate your deep core muscles and improve your connection to your core.

Who doesn't love hundreds?βœ¨πŸ’―
Okay, maybe not everyones favourite movement, but it is a very beneficial one, and a very good one to perform at home! πŸ’œ

The hundreds primarily target the deep core muscles while also working the hip flexors, arms, postural muscles, and breath control. When performed properly, this movement helps improve core endurance, stability, coordination, and overall body awareness - all things that support us in everyday life. A strong core can help improve posture, support the spine, reduce unnecessary strain on the lower back, and make daily movements like walking, lifting, bending, and even standing feel more supported and controlled.πŸŒΏπŸ™Œ

A few things to keep in mind:
- Draw your naval towards your spine to activate your deep core
- Lift your head, neck, and shoulders from the core instead of pulling through your neck
- Reach your arms long beside your body and pulse through the arms
- Relax your shoulders away from your ears
- Extend your legs only as far as you can while still maintaining your core engagement
- Coordinate your breath with the movement - inhale for 5 pulses and exhale for 5 pulses
- Complete 10 full breath cycles to complete the hundreds!

The biggest thing to keep in mind is staying connected to the movement. As always, slow, controlled, and intentional reps are far more beneficial than rushing through it. Maybe some days you can only get to 70, thats okay! Practise make progress and progress builds strength!πŸ’ͺ🏼
