He was a respected member of the Athens Community as he was a past town Councillor and Reeve serving a combined 21 years . He was also elected Warden of United Counties of Leeds and Grenville. He loved his community and took pride in trying to make it thrive and grow. He was instrumental in bringing the idea of painting murals on the walls of various buildings in the village. John's greatest pride was his family, he was a huge supporter and sports fan to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He would think nothing of venturing on a long road trip to catch a game. Hockey being his favourite sport! But baseball, basketball was also enjoyed. His hobbies included golf, fishing, hunting, card games, talking politics and world events or simply reminiscing about past adventures and events.
