Dr. Tim Lam is back from the Madrid ICCAT meeting to plan a workshop on bluefin reproduction and early life history science. In 2015, LPRC scientists lowered the age of sexual maturity of "western" bluefin tuna with Dr. Gilad Heinisch's PhD work. Jessie Knapp's PhD work showed similar fecundity & habits of W. spawners with Med spawners. Earlier, we predicted the existence and likely importance of Atlantic spawning grounds based on our ecology and tagging results. Finally, NEFSC collaborators confirmed Atlantic spawning grounds by finding those larvae. It took 20+ years to get that independent ("controversial!" ) science done. We hope that US HMS and ICCAT support progressive thinking as well as next steps necessary to obtain full understanding. LPRC thanks ICCAT leadership for inviting us to participate in this important meeting. We look forward to progress and exploration for this "last frontier" for Atlantic bluefin science. We will need your support for that campaign!
