TUESDAY TECH TIP: LABEL YOUR GEAR!

Ever come back from a dive and wonder which piece of equipment belongs to you? Or spend time sorting through a pile of identical gear at the end of the day?

Label your gear!

Whether you’re diving open circuit, sidemount, or rebreather, marking your equipment is a simple habit that can save time, prevent mix-ups, and keep your dive day running smoothly.

Remember, labeling isn’t just about keeping track of your expensive gear. Clear identification helps reduce confusion and supports good team organization.

TUESDAY TECH TIP

TEAM GAS MATCHING — DIVE THE SAME GAS

When planning a technical dive, members of the same team should, whenever practical and appropriate for the dive plan, use matching breathing-gas mixes.

For example, if one diver is using 30% Nitrox, the entire team should be planned around 30% Nitrox for that portion of the dive.

Why does this matter?

✅ Simplified gas sharing: If a diver experiences a gas failure, a teammate’s gas is more likely to be suitable for the planned depth, provided all other gas limits are respected.

✅ Easier contingency planning: Matching gases simplifies planning for gas failures, lost gas, and other emergencies.

✅ More manageable decompression: If a diver has to switch to a teammate’s gas or follow a contingency plan, matching gas mixes can make managing decompression obligations more straightforward.

✅ Clearer team communication: Everyone understands the planned gases, switches, and procedures, reducing confusion when things don’t go as planned.

✅ Better team redundancy: Your teammate is part of your backup plan. Gas compatibility needs to be considered before entering the water, not during an emergency.

⚠️ Remember: Matching gas mixes alone does not guarantee compatibility. Depth limits, oxygen exposure, gas supply, decompression schedules, and bailout or contingency procedures must all be considered during dive planning.

Plan as a team. Dive as a team. Be prepared to solve problems as a team.

Understand the WHY — Don’t Just Follow the HOW.

In technical diving, it’s easy to learn a procedure and simply repeat it because that’s the way you were taught.

But understanding WHY you’re doing something is far more important than blindly following a checklist.

Know the reasoning behind your equipment configuration, gas choices, procedures, and team protocols. When you understand the “why,” you’re better prepared to recognize problems, make informed decisions, and adapt when circumstances change.

Don’t just memorize the procedure. Understand the reason behind it.

Dive with knowledge. Dive with purpose.

What are your plans for this coming weekend?

Our team just made it back from an incredible cave diving workshop in Missouri, and there’s no slowing down!

We have a busy weekend ahead at Proper Diving, with an Instructor Crossover Program, Rescue Diver course, and Advanced Open Water course all on the schedule.

From cave diving in the Midwest to training divers right here at home, it’s going to be another action-packed weekend!
