Coaches don’t just happen.

You build them.

During Superheroes, our STORM coaches aren’t standing on the sidelines watching the adults coach or talking to each other.

They’re coaching.

They’re working with small groups of our Superheroes.

Demonstrating.

Giving directions.

Helping.

Encouraging.

Learning how to keep them focused when they have other plans. 😂

Giving them responsibility while also giving them support is important to their growth.

STORM stands for Special Team Of Roll Models.

The goal isn’t to make kids pretend to be coaches.

It’s to give them real opportunities to develop the skills they’ll need to become good ones.

Today they’re helping lead a group of Superheroes.

One day, they may be running the room.

One day you’re the kid following the warm-up.

Then one day, you’re the one standing at the front leading it.

We don’t expect our young leaders to suddenly know how to coach.

We give them opportunities to try.

We stand right beside them.

We notice what they do well.

We praise it.

We give them constructive feedback on what they can do better.

And then we give them another opportunity to try again.

It is about learning how to stand in front of a group, use your voice, give directions, take responsibility, accept feedback and become a little more confident doing it the next time.

We’re not just building better Jiu Jitsu students.

We’re building the people who will eventually be standing at the front of the room.

A little field trip to Team DNA BJJ

Raechel and Alan brought a couple of Karma members along to visit Dainis, Sarah and the crew at DNA while Jordan Preisinger brought Guess My Belt back to Durham.

Last time we got to host this fun event at Karma in 2025. (Link in bio)

This time, we got to sit back and enjoy it at our friends gym.

One of the best parts of Jiu Jitsu is getting off your own mats and onto others.

Different academy. Different people. Same shared love for doing this weird hobby together.

Thanks to Dainis and Sarah for having us.

It’s always good to spend time with friends, especially when they own the gym down the road.

JIU JITSU IS NOT ABOUT JIU JITSU

One weekend. A lot of different sides of Jiu Jitsu.

Coach Alan spent last weekend competing at IBJJF Masters Worlds, then switched roles to coach Zach at Jiu Jitsu Con Kids.

From there, it was off to Milwaukee for the Gentle Art Lifestyle Summer Camp, because no matter how long you’ve been doing jiu jitsu, there is always more to learn.

While there, Alan received his second stripe on his brown belt from his best friend, JoshuaJ

Competitor.

Coach.

Student.

Friend.

And somewhere in between all of that, he got to spend time with friends from all over the world. People he probably never would have known if it weren’t for Jiu Jitsu.

The medals, belts and stripes are part of it.

But once again…

Jiu Jitsu is not about Jiu Jitsu.

JIU JITSU IS NOT ABOUT JIU JITSU

This might be one of the coolest gifts we’ve ever received.

A friend made this wooden coaster for Karma, with our logo burned into the wood, along with “Globetrotters” and “Jiu Jitsu is not about Jiu Jitsu” written in Norse.

But the best part isn’t what’s on it.

It’s who made it.

We met years ago while travelling for Jiu Jitsu.

We went somewhere to train.

We came home with a friend.

Turns out Jiu Jitsu has a funny way of giving you a lot more than Jiu Jitsu.

Thank you for making this for us. We absolutely love it. ❤️

JIU JITSU IS NOT ABOUT JIU JITSU

Meet Emma.

Two months old and already making her first appearance on the mats at Karma Jiu Jitsu.

Big sister Lucy (Superhero) is 6 and has been doing jiu jitsu for two years at Karma. Emma has a little catching up to do.

But we’re keeping this photo.

Because in about 10 years, we want to recreate it.

Something tells us she’ll be spending plenty of time on these mats between now and then. ❤️
