I was very happy to see that our club crest is the featured example for custom crests in the Hatash*ta catalog. Our crest was the result of brainstorming, that took place after class one night, between myself Sensei Norm and Sensei Christos. Sensei Norm then took our collaborative idea and created the template for our organizations emblem. Hatash*ta Int'l Hatash*ta International has since embroidered patches for us which we are extremely pleased with.

I wanted to share this because I have always been proud of our emblem and the meaning behind it ( which the students are taught during class ).

Sensei Norm , in the past , has made club shirts with adorned with our emblem. Perhaps it's time for another run.

Cheers

Shihan Glen

I have posted this meme before.. but I really can't stress this point enough. I know this from years of experience as I've done both.. Sport: Judo and Karate ... Self Defense Ninjutsu, Jujutsu and Aiki-Jujutsu. Having worked in the Jails for a dozen years, where weekly ( sometimes daily) I would have apply my skills, there is no place for sport in a real confrontation.

BJJ & Muay Thai are great in the ring or cage, but laying on your back legs open ( the guard ) or dancing around with your hands out at both sides isn't the way to go. There's no rules , no refree and no soft mat under you in a real world situation.

In Aiki-Jujutsu ( specifically Chokushin as practiced at Musubi Dojo) the focus is self defense. We practice a lot of throws because when you throw someone on pavement they likely aren't getting up. We practice striking nerve motor points to cause temporary dysfunction of limbs and body. We practice standing chokes and joint locks for control and if necessary incapacitation. Lastly we practice simple ground techniques because although the ground is the last place you want to go , you want to know what to do if / when you end up there.

All of the above mentioned skills are practiced against empty hand and weapon attacks , single and multiple attackers.

So .. if you want to win trophies, medals, belts and titles ... then yes sport systems ( Muay Thai, BJJ , Judo, Tae Kwon Do etc ) are great forms of recreation. However if you want to learn to protect yourself in the real world ( especially if you work in law enforcement , military security etc .. but not limited to ) then seriously consider spending your time training in an art(s) who focus on application of techniques for self protection.

There endth the lesson

BJJ is a great sport but a limited form of self defense.. sharing that in common with boxing.

Not really ideal for multiple opponents, weapon situations or giving you the ability to tactically retreat.

Today I conducted a sparring seminar involving both Nage and Atemi waza ( throwing and striking techniques). Many traditional forms or Jujutsu and Aiki-Jujutsu over look the value of this type of training. Sparring isn't the be all and end all but it is a useful tool in learning things such as distance, timing, transitioning between techniques and dealing with resistance during application.

I personally feel any system, traditional or modern, does their students and their system a disservice by not making this type of practice part of their regular training.

Unfortunately we didn't think to take pictures during the throwing portion of the seminar LOL.

I would like to thank Sensei Christos Grímnir Almisse ,Sensei Norm Jolin and Sensei Andre Nadler for their assistance in delivering today's training.

Hey gang

I just wanted to say a big thank you to all who contributed to our recent mat purchase!! I greatly appreciate your support for our club .. we are small but we are both tough and resilient!!

The mats are now at the church in the storage area. I'm going to try and be there at 1230 Sunday to try and figure out the best configuration ( I have some ideas from previous venues where I've used these same mats)

A special thanks to Sempai Matt Allen for helping me unload and put the mats in the storage area.

Photos of the mats down in our venue will be forth coming!

Cheers

Sensei Glen
