Every young athlete wants to train like the pros.

They want the heavy weights, the advanced drills, the flashy exercises they see on social media.

The problem?

Most young athletes haven’t mastered the fundamentals yet.

Before speed comes coordination.
Before power comes balance.
Before strength comes movement quality.

According to long-term athlete development principles, the early years should focus on building a strong foundation of athleticism. Running, jumping, landing, skipping, balancing, changing direction, reacting, coordinating the upper and lower body, and learning how to control movement are the building blocks that every athlete needs.

Think of athletic development like building a house. If the foundation is weak, it doesn’t matter how impressive the roof looks. Eventually, the cracks will show.

The athletes who develop the fastest over the long term are not always the ones lifting the heaviest weights at 12 years old. They are the ones who spend years developing balance, coordination, agility, body awareness, strength, and movement competency.

Master the basics first.

Because when the foundation is strong, everything built on top of it becomes stronger too.

The goal isn’t to create the best 12-year-old athlete.

The goal is to create the best 18, 22, and 25-year-old athlete possible.

Trust the process. Build the foundation. Develop the athlete long-term.
