Most confined space hazards are like the shark in Jaws. You don't see them until it's too late.

Low oxygen, hydrogen sulfide and carbon monoxide have no colour, and you can't trust your nose to find them. A tank, vault or pit can look completely normal and still drop the first worker through the hatch, then the one who goes in after them.

IRATA or SPRAT? If you're getting into rope access, it's one of the first questions you'll ask.

Clayton, an instructor at APEX Rope Industries in Calgary, breaks it down. IRATA, the Industrial Rope Access Trade Association, was created in Europe. SPRAT, the Society of Professional Rope Access Technicians, was created in the United States. Both set the standards that technicians and companies follow in training and on the job.

The 2 schemes are very similar. The differences are subtle: equipment requirements, rigging between levels, and how rescues are run.

Who is responsible for confined space rescue? Most people say the employer. Alberta's OHS Code says the employer and the worker.

Section 55(1) says an employer must ensure a worker does not enter or remain in a confined space unless an effective rescue can be carried out. Section 55(2) puts the same duty on the worker. A worker must not enter or stay in a confined space unless an effective rescue can be carried out.

That means the rescue gets planned before the entry, not during the emergency.

Before anyone goes in:

Air tested by a competent worker. Oxygen between 19.5% and 23.0%.
Entry permit signed by a competent person.
A tending worker in communication with whoever is inside.
Rescue gear on hand and trained responders ready.

Air first. Rescue ready. Then entry.

Monday, 8:00 AM to Friday, 5:00 PM. This is one week of IRATA Rope Access Training at APEX Rope Industries in Calgary, Alberta.

You learn the system: two ropes, two anchors, every time. Then ascending, descending, rope-to-rope transfers and casualty rescue.

Next course: November 2 to 6, 2026. Levels 1, 2 and 3 train in the same week, and Level 1 needs no previous experience.

Why do IRATA Level 1 trainees fail their assessment? We asked Clayton Holt, Co-founder & Lead Instructor at APEX Rope Industries in Calgary, Alberta.

He sees the same 3 mistakes:
1. Trusting the main line and letting fall factor creep up.
2. Complacency, like leaving an edge under-protected.
3. The fixed aid climb. Dropping to a single point of contact is the most common reason he has seen a Level 1 fail.
