For seven days this month, the Prince George Rod and Gun Club will be the place to be to watch Canadaโs top handgun target shooters compete for the honour of being a national champion.
The 2026 Canadian Handgun International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) Nationals start on Monday, July 27 and run through Sunday, Aug. 2, and with 330 competitors coming to the city the host club needs a little help getting ready for it.
Itโs recognized as the largest shooting competition in the country and to accommodate that many shooters the club will be building several carport-like metal structures to shield them from the weather elements. To get them built over the next few weeks the club has put the call out for volunteers to lend a hand.
If you would like to help or know somebody whoโs willing, email club vice-president Andrew Tomlinson at [email protected] or [email protected].
The structures and other upgrades will remain in place after the national championships for the use of club members for practice and future competitions.
The club has two shooting range facilities, both located on the southwestern outskirts of the city.
The main facility at 9444 Hartman Rd. covers 100 acres and is the largest range in Northern BC. It has 100-metre and 200-metre rifle ranges, several handgun ranges, a small-bore silhouette range, shotgun/black powder ranges and an indoor air gun range.
The Blackwater facility has a 1,400-metre rifle range and seven action bays for handgun shooting, multigun practice and training.
This is a busy summer for the PGRGC, which is also hosting the BC Provincial Rifle Silhouette Championships, Aug. 15-18. That competition is divided into two days of small-bore shooting, Aug. 15-16, and two days of high-power trigger action, Aug. 17-18.
The clubโs extreme long range program is hosting the ELR Team Challenge, with targets set between 849 metres and 1,374 metres, on Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11.
Shooters wonโt have quite so far to lock in their sights at the ELR Blackjack Challenge on Sept. 19, with targets placed at 1,100-1,200 metres.
Established in June 1946, the Prince George Rod and Gun Club is one of the oldest sporting clubs in Prince George.
