Angler Oscar de Leon first caught this blue marlin aboard Captain Raymond Cruz's vessel, Islamar, off the coast of Puerto Rico in October of 2012. The weight and length of the fish are unclear, as was the gear used to tag the fish. However, we can safely say this fish was healthy and treated well. Almost eleven years later, in May of 2023, this blue marlin was recaptured. Captain Jose Linares reeled in this fish on his boat, Live to Fish, while fishing in the waters of Venezuela. This blue was brought in on a rod and reel and was noted to be in excellent condition!

Amazingly, this fish spent eleven years at large. Even better, the tag remained on the fish for all 3,880 days between the initial tag and the recapture. A bird's eye view shows 1,973 miles between tag and recapture locations, but who knows how many thousands of miles this blue marlin swam in over a decade!

Queen Conch Fishing Season Closure:

All fishers and the public are informed that at the close of business on the 14th of May 2023, the Queen Conch (Strombus gigas) fishery in Belize will be declared closed. This is necessary due to the realization of the production quota for the 2022-2023 season. The fishing community is advised that all conch fishing activities shall cease as of this date, until the opening of the next fishing season on the 1st of October, 2023.

▶ The conch fishery is considered one of the most lucrative (alongside lobster fishery), in Belize. Through continuous engagement with stakeholders, fishermen are encouraged to respect the size restrictions and no-take regulations of protected areas.

🚩 Specific threats include: fishing during closed season; taking undersize conch; fishing in no-take zones; and over-fishing generally. WCS Belize

Did you know that jaguars are the most powerful of the world’s living ? They have the greatest bite force. But the population for this iconic species is declining due to human activities such as deforestation, and illegal wildlife trade.

On World Jaguar Day, we call on you to help protect them from extinction, as they currently are near threatened, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, IUCN.

What are you doing to ensure that your children and grandchildren are able to appreciate these marvelous creatures?
