History

Meet the Pioneer of Fly Fishing in Southern Belize and founder of Tarpon Caye lodge. is from the village of Placencia in the Stann Creek District of Belize. Guiding by age nineteen, he has over 45 years of experience fishing the waters of Belize and is considered one of the most knowledgeable and respected guides in the country. Charlie is now a master of casting and fly presentation to permit tarpon and bonefish. In the early 70’s Lefty Kreh was one of the major Influencers that played a heavy handed role in Charlie’s development as a fly fishing guide. Lefty was another up and coming superstar in the international world of fly fishing. As Charlie Remembers, “ I met Lefty, and he was the first guy who put a fly rod in my hand and said, ‘one day you will need this rod’.

In a profession traditionally dominated by men, Julie Leslie broke barriers and made history as Belize’s first female fly fishing guide.

Raised in the legendary Leslie fly fishing family, she learned the flats, tides, and the art of guiding under the mentorship of her father, Charlie Leslie Sr. Her passion, determination, and knowledge helped open the door for future generations of women in Belize’s sportfishing industry.

Today, we’re proud to celebrate not only her accomplishments but also the legacy she continues to represent.
