Business of Sport Summit Opens in Gaborone

The inaugural Business of Sport Summit Botswana commenced today at Royal Aria Hotel in Tlokweng, bringing together sports administrators, business leaders, sponsors, investors, media practitioners and other key stakeholders for a day of engagement on the growing role of sport in economic development.

Among the distinguished guests in attendance were the Minister of Sport and Arts, Honorable Jacob Kelebeng, captains of industry, sports leaders, sponsors, development partners and members of the media, reflecting the broad commitment to advancing sport as a key contributor to Botswana’s economy.

The summit serves as a platform for meaningful discussions on topics such as sports sponsorship, commercialization, investment, media engagement, sports tourism and leadership transformation, all aimed at strengthening Botswana’s sport industry and unlocking new opportunities for growth.

In his welcome remarks, Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Olebile Sikwane, highlighted the importance of recognising sport not only as a source of participation and national pride, but also as a powerful economic driver capable of creating jobs, attracting investment and strengthening communities.

Mr. Sikwane emphasised that sustainable growth in sport requires strong collaboration between government, the private sector, development partners, the media and sporting organisations. He further encouraged businesses to view their involvement in sport as strategic partnerships that create shared value rather than simply sponsorship opportunities.

He also called for the development of a new generation of visionary, innovative and commercially minded sports leaders who can position sport as a catalyst for economic and social progress.

The summit continues in the afternoon with further deliberations focused on practical solutions, strategic partnerships and investment opportunities aimed at unlocking the full potential of sport and strengthening Botswana’s sporting ecosystem.
