At the World Athletics Ultimate Championships, Kemorena Tisang clocked 49.21s to finish 6th in his semifinal, narrowly missing out on a place in the final. 🇧🇼

Maun Marks Persons with Disabilities in Sport and Arts Awareness Day

Stakeholders in Maun today came together for the Persons with Disabilities in Sport and Arts Awareness Day, held at the Maun Centre for Special Education under the theme “Empowering Ability Through Sport, Creativity and Career Development.”

The event brought together persons with disabilities, students, athletes, educators, community leaders and sport stakeholders to promote greater understanding of disability and the importance of creating equal opportunities in sport, education, the arts and career development.

Among those in attendance were Kgosi Rra Phenya-New Disana, BNSC Director, Sport Development Mr. Peaceful Seleka, accompanied by his Sport Development colleagues as well as representatives from the Ministry of Sport and Arts, North West District Council, PASSOBO and community organisations.

The programme featured inclusive aerobics, games, music and awareness activities before moving into discussions aimed at challenging myths and stereotypes surrounding disability.

A key highlight was the Lived Experiences and Inspirational Stories session, where Kefilwe Montsamai, Elsie Tando and an athlete shared their personal experiences. Their testimonials highlighted the challenges faced by persons with disabilities, while also demonstrating how support, opportunity and determination can help individuals overcome barriers and pursue their ambitions.

The discussions emphasised that disability should not be viewed as a limitation to a person's potential. Instead, greater attention needs to be placed on removing barriers such as stigma, discrimination, inaccessible facilities and limited opportunities.

Speaking through the event, the role of sport in promoting inclusion was also highlighted. Sport provides persons with disabilities with opportunities to develop their abilities, build confidence, improve their wellbeing and participate meaningfully within their communities.

The youth perspective was further brought into the programme by a student from Maun Senior Secondary School, who shared thoughts on inclusion and the importance of creating environments where young people with disabilities can participate equally.

The event concluded with a call for continued collaboration between government, sport organisations, schools, communities and disability organisations to ensure that persons with disabilities are not only included, but are given meaningful opportunities to participate, develop their talents and contribute to society.

BNSC CEO Pays Courtesy Visit to Francistown City Leadership

Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Olebile Sikwane, recently paid a courtesy visit to the City of Francistown, where he held discussions with His Worship Deputy Mayor of Francistown, Hon. Uyapo Nyeku, representing His Worship the Mayor of Francistown, Hon. Gaone Mojere, in absentia.

Mr. Sikwane was accompanied by BNSC Director, Commercial Mr. Makuke Stephen Makuke as well as the Marketing and Communications Manager, Strategic Partnerships Manager, Sport Development Officer, and Stadium Management Officer.

The engagement focused on strengthening collaboration between the BNSC and the City of Francistown in advancing sport development and positioning the city as a key destination for national sporting events. Discussions centred on the importance of hosting more sporting activities in Francistown and other major towns across Botswana, in line with the Commission's commitment to ensuring that the benefits of sport are enjoyed by communities throughout the country.

The parties also discussed the Sport for All initiative, stadium utilisation and compliance requirements, and the need to create more opportunities for community participation in sport. The BNSC further sought the City's support in engaging the private sector to invest in sport and related development projects, recognising the important role that business can play in growing the sport industry and creating economic opportunities.

Among the key areas discussed was the future growth of the Botswana Sport Awards, with the Commission sharing its vision of evolving the awards into a flagship national event that extends beyond the ceremony itself. The concept would see additional activities being introduced around the awards to attract more guests, create business opportunities, and contribute to local economic growth while celebrating Botswana's sporting excellence.

The meeting also explored opportunities linked to the City of Francistown Investment Company, tourism and wildlife development, as well as infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the city's appeal. These included BTC-supported gateway monuments similar to those at the Tropic of Capricorn, plans for additional road infrastructure, including another high-way/flyover interchange, and the proposed Statue of Kgosi Nswazwi, which will further showcase the city's heritage and identity.

The courtesy call reaffirmed the shared commitment between the BNSC and the City of Francistown to leverage sport as a catalyst for social and economic development, while strengthening partnerships that will help bring more sporting events, investment opportunities and national programmes to the city.

COSBOTS Holds AGM Official Opening

The Copyright Society of Botswana (COSBOTS) officially opened its Annual General Meeting (AGM) yesterday through a dual-location hybrid meeting held at the BTV Auditorium in Gaborone and Cresta Thapama Hotel in Francistown.

The opening brought together stakeholders from the creative and sporting sectors, with discussions focusing on strengthening Botswana's creative industries and building sustainable partnerships.

Representing the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC), Mr. Anderson Nlisana, Manager Marketing & Communications, delivered a speech on behalf of the BNSC CEO, Mr. Olebile Sikwane. He highlighted the close relationship between sport and the creative sector, noting that music, photography, film, design and other creative disciplines play a vital role in enhancing sporting experiences and preserving moments of national significance. He also emphasized that both sport and creativity are industries that create jobs, stimulate economic growth and provide opportunities for young people.

Mr. Nlisana further called for stronger collaboration between BNSC and COSBOTS to promote copyright awareness within the sporting sector, while encouraging fair compensation and professional engagement of local creatives at sporting events.

The programme also featured contributions from the National Arts Council of Botswana CEO, Mr. Gaokgala Lemmenyane, and a keynote address by Her Worship, Deputy Mayor of the City of Gaborone, Honourable Councillor Mankie Sekete.

The AGM provided a valuable platform for stakeholders to connect, exchange ideas and strengthen collaboration towards the growth of Botswana's creative and sporting sectors.

Africa Aquatics Zone IV Swimming Championships Conclude in Botswana

The XXII Africa Aquatics Zone IV Swimming Championships came to a thrilling close in Gaborone after four days of exciting competition, with swimmers from 13 countries battling for honours.

Namibia emerged as the overall champions, with Botswana finishing second and South Africa third.

In his closing remarks, BNSC Director Sport Development, Mr Peaceful Seleka, congratulated the athletes and applauded the Botswana Swimming Sports Association (BSSA) for successfully hosting the championships. He also thanked the officials, volunteers, partners and supporters whose contribution helped make the event a success.

Zone IV Aquatics President, Mr Jace Naidoo, also expressed his appreciation to Botswana for hosting the championships, commending the organisers, athletes and officials for their efforts and the competitive spirit displayed throughout the four days.

The championships concluded on a high note, celebrating outstanding performances, new friendships and the continued growth of aquatics in the region.
