KENNY WILCOX
Class of 2023 Inductee - The Bull Riding Hall of Fame

Kenny qualified for the National Finals Rodeo a total of 5 times, 1980, '81, '82, '83 and 1985. At his first NFR in 1980, Kenny won the NFR Bull Riding Average title.
Kenny also won or placed at many of the larger Rodeos and Bull Ridings across the country, including Cheyenne and Salinas. Kenny was one of those kind of bull riders that was likely to ride anybody's rank bull at any given time. A high riding percentage was a key to his success.
Congratulations Kenny Wilcox!

Butch Kirby on X5 — Houston Rodeo, 1986

Step back to 1986 at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, when Butch Kirby squared off against one of the rankest bulls of the era — X5. Known for its violent spins and explosive power, X5 demanded absolute precision, balance, and nerve from anyone who drew him.

Kirby’s ride was about far more than a score. Staying aboard for the full eight seconds, he delivered a performance defined by grit, control, and sheer determination — the very qualities that shaped professional bull riding in the 1980s.

Rides like this are why fans still speak reverently of that era. Raw stock, fearless cowboys, and moments that felt electric the instant they happened.

Butch Kirby’s battle with X5 remains one of the most memorable bull rides in Houston Rodeo history — a lasting symbol of the courage it takes to match strength with chaos and come out standing.

Bodacious (brand J-31), born in 1988, is one of the most iconic and feared bucking bulls in rodeo history. He burst onto the professional scene in 1992, quickly earning a reputation as virtually unrideable and becoming a nightmare matchup for even the best riders in the world.

In 135 outs on the PRCA and PBR circuits, Bodacious bucked off 127 riders and was only successfully ridden eight times.

Bodacious didn’t just buck off average riders — he challenged legends and left a mark on the sport that few animals ever have:
• Tuff Hedeman — One of the few riders to make an eight-second ride on Bodacious (95 points), but another encounter left Hedeman with major facial injuries that required extensive surgery.

• Terry Don West — Another top cowboy who managed to ride Bodacious, including an impressive 87-point effort, yet also felt the bull’s brutal power.

• Clint Branger, Bubba Dunn, and Ben “Legs” Stevenson also appear among the handful of riders who stayed on for qualified rides.

Bodacious dominated the sport throughout the early 1990s:
• PRCA Bucking Bull of the Year – 1994 & 1995
• PRCA Bucking Bull of the NFR – 1992, 1994 & 1995
• 1995 PBR World Champion Bull — becoming one of only two bulls to hold world titles in both PRCA and PBR.

After seriously injuring several riders — most notably at the 1995 NFR — Bodacious was officially retired in December 1995 while still in his prime. His owner, Sammy Andrews, made the decision partly out of concern for cowboy safety.
He continued to make celebrity appearances at rodeos and fairs and was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1999, the Bull Riding Hall of Fame in 2017, and received the PBR Brand of Honor in 2019 — one of the highest honors a bull can receive.

Stetson Wright could have easily taken that special Gooding Centennial buckle home and added it to one of the greatest trophy collections in rodeo.

After tying the Gooding arena record with a huge 90-point ride aboard JD’s horse, *Cowboy Fool* — matching the exact score his father Cody Wright once rode there — the moment already felt legendary. And during the 100th anniversary of the Gooding Fair and Rodeo, the buckle carried even more meaning.

But what Stetson did afterward may have meant even more than the ride itself.

Instead of keeping the buckle, Stetson quietly handed it to the Hamaker family and chose to celebrate the moment with JD.

One person close to the moment said Stetson simply smiled and said:

“Buckles are special… but people are more important.”

That single gesture reminded everyone why so many people respect him beyond the arena.

Great cowboys are remembered for winning.
But the best ones are remembered for how they treat people along the way.

Stetson didn’t just leave Gooding with another great ride.
He left behind a reminder that kindness, friendship, and character will always outshine silver and gold.

Myrtis Dightman is a true trailblazer in the history of rodeo. Nicknamed ""The Jackie Robinson of Rodeo,"" he broke barriers in 1967 when he became the first Black bull rider to qualify for the National Finals Rodeo (NFR), where only the top 15 competitors in the world are invited to compete. His achievements not only demonstrated his incredible talent and determination but also paved the way for greater inclusivity in the sport.

Known for his skill, calm demeanor, and resilience, Dightman competed in the PRCA during a time when opportunities for Black cowboys were scarce.
In addition to his 1967 NFR qualification, Dightman qualified six more times, earning respect and admiration across the rodeo community. He also became a mentor to younger Black cowboys, such as Charles Sampson, who would later become the first Black world champion bull rider in 1982.
In recognition of his groundbreaking contributions, Dightman was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1997. His legacy continues to inspire cowboys and cowgirls of all backgrounds to pursue their dreams in the arena.

Troy Dunn: A Legend in Bull Riding
Born on May 8, 1967, Troy Dunn grew up in a family of five, the second youngest among his siblings. His journey into the world of bull riding began at just nine years old, starting with calves. By the age of 17, he entered his first open bull riding competition, and by 1987, he was riding professionally in Australia.
Throughout the early '90s, Dunn’s career was marked by both thrilling victories and a growing list of injuries. However, in 1995, he roared back to reclaim his title at the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) World Finals, delivering weeks of electrifying performances. His dominance continued, and in 1997, he cemented his legacy by capturing the PBR World Championship. That year, one of his most unforgettable rides came aboard the legendary bull Red Wolf, scoring an incredible 95 points—a ride that remains etched in rodeo history.

Despite a dislocated hip in 1998, Dunn’s relentless spirit saw him return stronger than ever, once again winning the PBR tour title and securing the prestigious golden buckle of champions. His final season in Canada came in 1999, but he continued competing in select events in the U.S., qualifying for the PBR World Finals for the next five years. Even at 38, he remained at the top of his game, making another Finals appearance in 2005.
Recognizing his immense contributions to the sport, the PBR honored Dunn with the prestigious Ring of Honor, celebrating his achievements and his lasting impact on bull riding. With a career defined by resilience, skill, and unforgettable performances, Troy Dunn stands as one of the greats in the world of professional bull riding.
