In the presence of horses…the truth and magic of me is revealed - to me…no way to be, just surrender to what is…

sometimes I think I can talk with animals, and I realize …it is the moments when I am reflected - without judgement - to myself…moments when I can really hear and feel who she is.

I love that about the intimate relationship with these creatures, and ourselves. It’s like medicine.

Reflected here, the past 6 weeks or so of horse energy…most soul enhancing, my experience on a working cattle farm in Brazil with my boi, Castanha, and human friends who made me family.

I am profoundly grateful for the experiences and treasures I get to collect. And the miles I have walked, flown, ridden in my cowboy boots that are doing the work of both standing on the ground and walking on.

Curious about equine facilitated coaching with me for inner leadership development, well-being, and trust-building?

Some client 💛:

“Equine facilitated learning with Ashley offered a profound, transformative experience that deepened my self-awareness. Interacting with the horses mirrored and illuminated my internal state. I believe this self-reflection will not only enhance my own leadership skills and emotional intelligence but could also significantly benefit anyone wanting to expand their horizon to beyond what is known, encourage empathy and authentic leadership.” ~ Founder/CEO, Wrook

Curious to see how a guided session with equine partners could serve you in this moment?

I went for a restful walk today, to observe nature and the Truth.

What caught my attention was a singular Gulf Fritillary butterfly pollinating some wild mint, a flowering and fragrant plant like I see in both Sri Lanka and the US (I love seeing this plant because it reminds me of both places).

I sat watching at the edge of a garden for 20 minutes, just observing and being with…

I noticed how when open in rest or camouflage the butterfly’s wings make the shape of an 🧡 And the underside has striding spots when closed.

And I was reminded how often we shroud, dress up, or camouflage our hearts in an imperfect attempt to get by in this human experience.

And how when we can rest wide open, in Truth even when uncomfortable, the ultimate courage and not easy to do, we might actually be free, and so let our hearts shine and connect with it all ♾️

Guess what? That butterfly is also called the Passion butterfly 🧡

How might you rest today?

I have a little secret practice I’ve been honing for the past almost 20 years since college, first stumbled upon before Junior Ring weekend at PC with my co-creator in good kinda trouble and fellow sailor, Holly…A trick before important events or to pump myself up…

My fall back is a good playlist and movement, but if and where it’s possible…

I go surfing and leave a little of the beach and surf on me…

This particular night in Colombo, Sri Lanka on stage with talking about courageous and creative leadership and the importance of slowing down and connecting with a wellspring and source within us in order to step into and co-create real positive change in the business landscape and for the world…to do what it takes to embody our freedom and fulfillment in community, individually, and for our organizations, and the world…

I went surfing in the morning, got absolutely pummeled, board and I held under water, sand in my ears for days…and as I sat on stage I noticed sand gently falling on my dark pants (from my ears, no doubt) and even after a shower could feel salt on my skin…

Further…tmi? …I intentionally don’t wash my hair on these occasions, even in college…the pleasure, power, and force of the ocean remain tangled in me and a certain wild freedom and confidence are accessible, giving me a small edge to have the courage to speak a bit more freely, a bit more authentically, and with a bit more intimacy and fire.

I also delight in telling dressed up professional people at important events that I just went for a surf…it seems to be an invitation to a more intimate and interesting conversation…a doorway to relaxing into being a bit more of ourselves together. Because, why not?

From where do you source your courage to be you and let your voice ring clear and true?

Working with horses in a coaching, healing, self development, growth and transformation capacity has taught me expanded ways to source wisdom from my body, accelerate my embodied learning, and deepen practices which support my thriving…

When coupled with a study of the neuroscience of change and sustainable transformation, my on-going personal fascination/exploration/embodiment of navigating the unknown with more ease in partnership w/the body as a compass, and a study of courage through experiential learning and travel…

I might pair it down to a few key concepts which continually surface no matter the audience or place…

Presence - fully embodied, in the moment, senses alive, simultaneous inner and outer awareness, with calm and spaciousness

Release - letting go to let come, the easiest hardest thing. Active surrendering of what’s outgrown its usefulness as a way of being, doing, believing, pressurizing, compressing, protecting …

Body - as I come back (after years) into full capacity of my musculature, I see the parallel to only functioning with part of our brains, the revered intellect alone. We have access to so much more, our animal senses and intentional participation of our neurobiology, a whole other deeply intelligent and useful distributed bodily intelligence

When taken together…

I experience in my whole being and way in the world, more peace, ease, joy and freedom. And effectiveness in leadership, self confidence, clarity of purpose, and empathy in relationships.

While I may choose to live uncharted, and appear far from status quo paths, all steps have been small and intentional. With inner peace, freedom, joy, and wonder as direction. However, any small or large incorporation of these learnings (with or without horses or travel), are available to you and benefit all of us equally however we may choose to lead aligned with our values.

DM if you’re curious about how more fully body living and thriving might serve you on your path, sustained or a new leap.

W/big horsie breaths of release,
Xx Ash

📣 🎉 🇱🇰 50% off UNCHARTED retreat for Sri Lankan residents 🇱🇰 🎉📣

Supporting leaders at a choice point for change, desiring more meaning & purpose in your work, and boldly curious about a different more harmonious way of being as you create the future and live now…

6 nights in the south (I know you know the place!), includes meals, private villa and yoga shala, daily intentional movement (yoga, surfing, bike riding, dance), Yala leopard tracking safari combined with special reforestation session for Visioning, x6 facilitated group sessions with yours truly following the Uncharted outward spiraling arc for navigating the unknown with more ease + ample negative space for slowing WAY down and getting clear, and lots of intentional details.

This is a less is more rather than prescriptive retreat design.

The approach to change and development is a combination of presence and experiential learning. The methodology somatic and body based, informed by neuroscience, illustrated with poetry, and co-facilitated each day by various natural locations which support the day’s topic. Each day’s theme is introduced and subtly amplified by the morning’s movement practice.

DM for full details and to apply. See website in bio for for flavor.

Are you ready for a change?

🎉 We did it, Coppertone!! 🐴 👩🏻‍🎓

Of all the programs, certifications, courses, etc. I’ve been part of, this one has brought me closest to joy, and a tremendous blossoming of courage + confidence as a result. A huge release, a letting go, a falling away of weight I’ve carried for lifetimes.

I follow, live, and lead my life at a growing edge of the unknown, a place I feel most free, alive, and sometimes, terrified. I say yes to what I can’t not do, even if it scares the hell out of me. I say yes to a deep intuition I’ve learned to trust without second guessing. I know the puzzle pieces of what I’m building will fall into right place, even if not as urgently as I’d like, so long as I keep honoring what calls me onward, honors my health, and sense of self and brings wonder.

I rode horses, dressage and jumping, as a little girl. Collected red and blue ribbons around my mirror. I still have my baby riding gloves and only recently donated my red tack box of grooming supplies.

I’ve felt a pull to return to the company of horses for the past 2 years, followed that to Costa Rica, and as a result reunited with an old friend who rescues young wild mustangs in Maine. I spent all fall into winter with them 5 hours weekly, mostly at liberty groundwork in the round pen and herd behavior observation. When we moved to North Carolina I upped the ante and ride 3x weekly over 10 hours/wk at various barns to build connection and learn.

I chose to pair a Neuroscience of Change coaching course with an Equine Facilitated Learning certification program this winter because I felt a bodily connection, each would amplify the potency of the other. I wasn’t wrong. Experiential learning with the whole body brain to create (accelerated & durable) change and new ways of being + a sprinkle of mystery x magic is a powerful cocktail for growth and development.

Partnering with horses, these wise beings are like a barometer of truth - their sensing capabilities reflecting what’s really going on within us, and guiding us to a more harmonious way, like no other coaching or therapy session I’ve ever experienced (and that’s a lotta sessions)

Join me for a session! 🐴

As a special element of The Aspen Institute‘s annual leadership development fellowship, First Movers, I’ve have the opportunity to coach values driven, risk for what they believe in, mid-career+ exceptional corporate change leaders. My 4th cohort’s leadership coaching group wrapped and we celebrated what it is to feel and be ourselves, to embody choice & freedom, in workplaces and ways of being & leading change.

In celebrating inner shifts they’d made the past 6 months and a wake of changes left behind…

A common theme emerged…I wonder if you can relate? I know I can.

Each lesson unique to their context, but a shared letting go of external validation, forcing/proving/over-efforting, or undermining of their own inherent worth…

Allowing for self trust, a stillness, more ease, peace, agency, less tension…a coming into their own power of presence from which they source wisdom and value.

When they felt and named the place in their body that represented ‘before’ their growth/shift (based on intentions we focus on throughout the container), and then felt the inner shift - or contrast- to the way they operate now as a result of their self-led development…

What became clear was…

A quality of their attention to the present moment, to a particular state of being, a slowwwiiing down or stillness, openness, expansion, a letting be, a resting place…

One of the most common struggles I see is the letting go of…control, ever-doing and proving, always stretched, outsourcing value and inner power…

Because we’ve been taught…

Peace is frowned upon. Ease is not ok. Stress, tension, how full the calendar is as measure of our worth…

In holding agendaless space to be in the present with what is, others can put their own words to their experience of what shifted…Almost always it’s a derivative of Presence. A courageous capacity to actively surrender to more spaciousness, ease, stillness…in order to source the lasting shifts and growth.

Sending an energetic hug of admiration to leaders like Viren (pictured), for leading with ease, calm, equity, and abundant calendar space for a ❤️:❤️…To leaders like who embody this brave shift and teach others by Being 💗

The secret to change and growth that lasts…(full ✍️ in newsletter, sign up link in bio)

No one can teach you how to be courageous, that’s a choice entirely yours…

What is helpful to be supported in is experiencing the conditions which facilitate courage.

Courage, ‘cor-‘ of the heart…

Patient, gentle, open, relaxed, full of choice…

But what often gets in our way is…

A sense of urgency behind all the doing, going, movement, productivity, striving, saving, achieving we so value…to feel of value 💚

And in that tension-inducing, gripping, constricted state of dis-ease, where we are desperate for control (urgency is ego’s need to control, and so ironically is self sabotaging), we cannot access the potency and power of our natural state of Being, or Presence, nor the wisdom available there…(the brain can’t be in both opposing functions at once)

Presence is…’fully attuned simultaneous attention’ (our inner state, emotions, physicality, and what’s external to us in our environment & with another) - defined by Amanda Blake, acclaimed neuroscience researcher & change coach

Our capacity for courage (change and growth) is a measure/reflection of the quality of our Presence…Presence is a state of Being that is the nourishing soil for courage. And our state of being, or Presence, informs our doing or action. (energy follows attention)

Presence is accessed through relaxation and spaciousness…

Anything that distracts from relaxation and spaciousness - like urgency, need to control, self doubt, overwhelm (just a few) - interrupts Presence, and so impedes courage, and our sense of choice/agency/wholeness/belonging.

Try this: Next time you feel urgency, have the self compassion to pause, and curious about make nourishing space for courage and new perspectives to thrive… in Presence.

If we were to meet now, agendas aside, nothing to prove, simply what we might like another to know about the core and essence of who we are…

It would depend on the moment and what’s generated in the space shared between me and the person I’m encountering in their moment, but it might go something like this…

I believe in the power and potency of wonder and awe…
I live for a sense of the kinda vibrant aliveness that fills my whole body with acute awareness…
I know inner freedom is a responsibility, and a choice…
And it is my wish for the world for each of us to know, feel, taste, and live in the rich and flourishing space of your wild, pre-default setting, the essence of our shared and collective radiance and joy.

But it hasn’t always been this way…If we met 5 years ago I may have told you I was a (frustrated) leader of sustainability in the fashion industry for 14 years at one of Nike’s companies, that I attempted to take on Big To***co from the inside, that I am an Aspen Institute fellow for my dedication and success at influencing positive change for society through a corporate and global setting, or that travel to distant places terrified me. Maybe a couple years ago I might have told you I am a coach for values driven leaders of change, or designer and facilitator of embodiment retreats and experiences in the wilds of Sri Lanka to aid you in building your capacity for courage and navigating change or unknown horizons or shifts as part of your desire for more joy, purpose, and impact…

, our host of this year’s (we are in year 3! 🥰), has published a version of a portion of my story (thank you I❤️U), an evolving story I, like you, have the choice to keep evolving & discovering as we leave space for what’s not yet known to emerge.

Check that out at the link in my bio. What parts of you do you feel reflected too?

May the you I meet today, and me you meet today, only be part of an unfolding journey to becoming more and more of who we really are…

I am excited to co-host with on Tuesday, March 5th the introduction of their first-ever monthly networking series 👏

A 30 minute space to receive a dose of inspiration and community with other like hearted social impact professionals and change makers.

The first topic of inspiration, followed by a thought-starter to be explored in small breakouts, is Embodying Courageous Leadership.

What is it to be and embody courage as a values-driven leader for positive change? How might we all explore and grow the crucial capacity of courage? What is the very first step in developing courage, with ease and confidence?

Join us to find out why courage begins in the heart, how it is a capacity we all share, and why it is not reserved for heroes or great acts of ‘fearlessness.’

Some of the most courageous leaders I admire have had the greatest obstacles to surpass, have humbly learned what it is to be compassionate toward self and others, and overflow with insatiable curiosity and delight.

But there is one step we often miss, a willingness to risk something that often holds us back from experiencing how courageous we really are…

Join us to find out and experience for yourself! Link in bio.
