A few weeks ago, Poseidon Performance was an empty studio with a vision.

This week, The Visitors Club came in to capture what it has become.

What you’ll see in the video isn’t a gym.

It’s people rebuilding confidence after injury.

It’s people in their 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s discovering they’re capable of far more than they thought.

It’s strength training, rehabilitation, laughter, coffee, conversation, and a community that’s growing every week.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part and to The Visitors Club for capturing it so well.

The BBC is reporting what the evidence has been pointing towards for years.

Strength training isn’t just about bigger muscles, PBs, or what you look like in the mirror.

A major study following nearly 150,000 people over 30 years found that those who consistently performed around 90–120 minutes of strength training per week had a lower risk of premature death, cardiovascular disease and neurological disease. (The Times)

The interesting part?

Most of the people who train at Poseidon aren’t bodybuilders.

They’re people in their 50s, 60s, 70s and even 80s.

People who want to:

• Stay independent
• Keep up with grandchildren
• Protect their joints and bones
• Recover from injury
• Continue doing the activities they love

Strength training isn’t about becoming an athlete.

It’s about staying capable.

The goal isn’t to become exceptional.

The goal is to avoid becoming limited.

That’s why we do it.

Who actually trains at Poseidon?

Most people assume a strength studio is full of young lads chasing bigger biceps.

The reality is very different.

Our youngest client is 23, and she’s very much the exception.

We have a group of mums in their 40s.

Most of our clients are in their 50s and 60s.

We also have several clients in their 70s and 80s.

The surprising thing?

Most had never done any proper strength training before walking through the door.

Many arrived convinced they were too old, too stiff, too weak, or that weights were for “gym people.”

A few months later they’re deadlifting, squatting, carrying things more easily, moving with more confidence, and often doing things they never thought they’d be capable of.

One of my favourite parts of the job is watching people realise they’re far stronger and more capable than they ever gave themselves credit for.

Strength training isn’t really about barbells.

It’s about staying independent.

It’s about being able to enjoy life, keep up with the grandchildren, carry the shopping, walk the South West Coast Path, row, garden, travel, and continue doing the things you love.

You’re never too old to get stronger.

If your instructor is getting a workout, who’s actually being coached?

A genuine question.

Many group fitness classes are built around everyone doing exactly the same thing at exactly the same time.

At Poseidon, you’ll never see me doing the workout.

You’ll see me coaching.

One person might have a knee replacement.

One might be recovering from cancer treatment.

One might have back pain.

One might simply want to stay strong enough to enjoy life.

The session may be shared, but the coaching is individual.

That’s why you’ll see me watching movement, correcting technique, adjusting exercises, and progressing each person differently.

Poseidon isn’t really a gym.

It’s a strength and rehabilitation studio that happens to use barbells, dumbbells and gym equipment to help people get stronger, move better and stay independent.

The goal isn’t to get through a workout.

The goal is to improve you.

Train in a group. Be coached as an individual.
