What is a teacher? Is it not to BECOME THE TEACHING?
Some expect a teacher to ‘tell them how’, to ‘lead’ them, to ‘point the way’ but such things cannot bring forth the truth they truly should look for when they ask ‘teach me’…
Only the DOING teaches. Only in BEING one can attempt to fulfill the teachers role.
Teaching is not in ‘knowing’ as most believe it to be, it is in the much wider enriching experience of DOING it.
The world is full of knowledge yet empty of doers.
Looking for a teaching and a teacher has little to do with looking for a friend, for gratification, fun, assurance, acknowledgment, emotional support and smiles. All these can be present or not, the teaching is not dependent on these and at times stand in opposition to it. As a culture we’re confused and lost such roles. We look for the same attributes in all of our relationships and that centers around empty things, god forbid someone should rock the boat or damage our gentle souls with a wrong word, we’ve surrounded ourselves with cotton people, cotton processes and cotton things.
Hence, when looking for a teacher, one must first be mature, achieve some base from which one can study. Without it, too much is placed in the wrong spots when one will try to truly study, practice and transform.
The teacher must work in collaboration with PARTS of you yet against parts of you as well. The whole journey depends on that ratio.
Let us be frank, most will not recognize an excellent cup of coffee or a rare wine in a blind test, what makes us think we can recognize a real teacher when we meet one?
Such recognition is developed with effort, struggle, hard earned experience, it is rare. People go looking for teacher recommendations on comment sections and forums, this speaks volumes on our approach.
It has been my great honor and pleasure to teach most of my life now, through my practice, without feeling the need to be perfect, ‘correct’, ‘all knowing’, ‘finished product’ or other delusions.
I view teaching as part of my practice and my practice as part of my teaching. For me one cannot exist without the other.
