Yoga invites us to first understand ourselves.
In the yogic tradition, Svadhyaya means self study. It is the practice of observing your thoughts, habits, reactions, and patterns with curiosity rather than judgment.
The mat is one of the greatest classrooms for this kind of learning.
Notice what happens when a pose becomes difficult. Do you become frustrated? Do you give up? Do you push harder than necessary?
Notice what happens when things are going well. Do you stay present, or does the mind immediately begin searching for the next challenge?
You begin to recognize patterns that extend far beyond yoga. The impatience that shows up in a challenging balance pose may also appear in your work. The tendency to compare yourself to others may not be limited to the mat. The stories that create stress, doubt, or fear often reveal themselves when you slow down enough to pay attention.
This is why self study is such an essential part of growth. We cannot change patterns we do not see.
