"Possession for itself is worthless if you don't know what to do with the ball later. Possession creates space, but understanding space creates purpose" – Johan Cruyff
Possession for its own sake is meaningless unless it serves a clear intention, a point encapsulated by Johan Cruyff’s idea that possession may create space, but understanding space creates purpose. Every action on the pitch must be deliberate: the ball is not circulated simply to keep it, but to provoke movement from the opponent, to draw them toward one area and open space elsewhere. Each pass should contribute to the broader aim of eliminating opponents through positioning, timing, and structure; when that is not immediately possible, possession becomes a tool to destabilise the opposition by forcing them out of shape. Players must choose passes that ensure continuity and security through collective support, adjusting their approach to the opponent’s organisation—switching play with longer passes against compact blocks, or combining quickly with short movements when space is available. In this way, possession is not the objective but the mechanism: it moves the opponent, reveals space, and gives the attack its true purpose—creating conditions to progress, pe*****te, and ultimately score.
"PRINCIPLES OF THE POSITIONAL PLAY" - Complete guide to understanding and coaching positional play. Tactical theory covers 10 principles used by masters of the positional play like Johan Cruyff and Pep Guardiola: playing out from the back, control of possession, positioning, movement, compactness, exploiting half-spaces, combination play, counter-pressing, vertical play and overload to isolate. With 40 tactical practices included (4 practices to coach each of the 10 principles). www.phaseofplay.com/shop
