Rose valley, Buzludzha and Shipka
One day from Sofia.
First stop - a rose field at dawn, where the air smells like the finest perfume in the world and your hands are pink before 9am.
Second stop - Buzludzha. A Soviet flying saucer abandoned on a mountain peak. One of the strangest and most beautiful places in Europe. Still standing. Still breathtaking.
Third stop - Shipka. Climb the freedom monument. Look south over the rose valley. Look north over the plains. Five centuries of history visible from one hilltop.
Bulgaria has been hiding these three things in the same valley for decades.
Rose season is short. June 6 is the Festival of Roses - the one day a year when the whole valley celebrates.

They found every single one themselves - hidden under leaves, tucked beside fallen logs, in a forest just outside Sofia that most people drive past without a second thought.
This is what a morning with Dobrin looks like. Bulgaria’s forests are extraordinary in spring - and morel season is short. A few more weeks and they are gone for another year.
