Ralph Reijnders has won the 13th Easter tournament. He remained undefeated in a tense battle between the advanced players. In his last round, his opponent Tom Schotte missed a win at move 56 to win the game and the tournament, causing a 33-31 finish. Also his 5th game against Brecht Van Damme - at that time both players were undefeated - finished in 31-33, with his opponent missing a win at move 55. Dimitri Vaes was runner-up with six wins.

No less than 29 players showed up in this sunshine tournament, with many junior and promising players. We also welcomed three new players.

Nancy Darck (5 points) was best woman of the day, while Fabio Buccoliero (4 points) was our best beginning player. He won against an advanced player and promotes himself to advanced. The best promising player of today was Pat Rine (4 points), while Sander Schotte (4 points) won the U18 category. He defeated his first advanced player along the way! Sacha Burnay (4 points) won the U14 and was the best promising player with a rating below 500. Norah Janssens (4 points) was the best U10 player of the day. Bert Sedeyn (3 points) was the best new player. All players will be rated in the next rating update.

Next up: Zonhoven, May 3rd.

We have finished the summer holidays in style with a garden tournament hosted by Tom and Nadja. They welcomed us in their garden for three simultaneous tournaments. Alongside there were cold drinks in the fridge and several items were available in between round to entertain (trampoline, ping pong table, basket ring...). There was the option to join a burger BBQ afterwards and gather around the camp fire. The ones who weren't there have been mistaken! :D
Owh, we also played - very laid back - a stunning five rounds
Tom Schotte won the A tournament with 5/5, with a notable second place for Nancy Darck with 3/5. Daphne Demoor wrapped up the B tournament with 4/5, mixing beginners and high ranked promising players. There promising player Wout Schotte managed to steal one point from one of the beginners. The C tournament was the tightest, with three players on 4/5. Romain Volvert had a narrow 8 disc tie-break advantage to Sander Schotte. Also on four points was Myrthe Demoor, who wasn't favorite at all, defeating Romain along the way. She won the best performance.

Ralph Reijnders won the 7th Marche-en-Famenne Othello Open. Our Dutch resident claimed his 4th tournament victory with an almost flawless performance. Before the last round he already knew he was the better one of his 12 opponents with 6/6 (and no one more than 4/6). In that last round he lost to Nancy Darck, local organizer (together with Dimitri Burnay) who made their garden available for this sunny event. They also made an incredible lunch for us.
Tom Schotte finished 2nd with 5/7 as well as Nancy Darck. Also Brecht Van Damme won 5 games, but with the lowest tie-break. Pierre Poliakoff was the best beginner and Pat Rine the best promising player.
There were some surprises along the way, with 9/42 games won by the lower rated player. The most surprising game was in round 1, where Pat Rine wiped (35-0) his opponent despite a 711 points rating disadvantage. Who that was, can be checked at https://flipthedisc.com/live/283 along with all other results and standings.

While he wasn't the highest rated player, Tom Schotte did win the first tournament in Zonhoven in 9 years. Roel Hobo from The Netherlands, the other 2000+ rated participant scored six points along the way, but had to be satisfied with a second place by tie-break. The tournament winner had some impressive wins and had a comfortable 35 point tie-break advantage and a win against our Dutch visitor (23-41), allowing him to lose against Dispong Kiatnarongrob (30-34). Our favorite Thai resident lost against Roel Hobo (19-45) and Wouter Thijs (37-27) which gave him a third place.
Nancy Darck (4) became best woman, while Tuur Jena (3) claimed best beginner. Sander Schotte (3) was the best promising player and Wout Schotte (2) best junior.
Tom Schotte is now sure to win the Belgian Grand Prix 2025 (his 15th title) and Wout Schotte the Junior Grand Prix 2025 (his 3rd title)
Next: Marche-en-Famenne, Saturday July 5th

Resident Dispong Kiatnarongrob wins Oudenaarde Easter Tournament 2025!

Traditions are meant to be honored, and that means an Othello tournament on Easter Monday. Just like the past three years, hosts Tom and Nadja were ready to welcome players into their home, along with freshly made and topped croques (with or without a bit of meat), a fully stocked fridge, freshly brewed coffee, and several Othello boards. This 12th edition of the annual social tournament turned out to be a record-breaking one. Excluding international tournaments (World Championship, European Championship, and European Grand Prix), this was the largest Belgian Othello tournament since 1999. No fewer than 34 players arrived through the front door, back door, or sliding window. Each found their place inside, along with a wrapped gift—following tradition, everyone brought a present to be redistributed at the end.

Between 12 and 1 p.m., the croques were devoured, and here and there, explanations were shared. No fewer than nine players made their debut, ranging in age from 6 to over 60. The advanced players numbered eight, and were outnumbered by seventeen promising players. For the first time, the youth were divided into three groups: U10, U14, and U18, with five, eight, and three players respectively. Sixteen youth players in a single tournament was another record. Fortunately, the weather stayed dry, and they could go outside to have fun (trampoline, basketball, soccer, and even archery).

Advanced Players

There were eight advanced players, but only two had previously won an A-level tournament: Tom Schotte, the highest-ranked and winner of his last three Belgian tournaments, was the favorite. Ralph Reijnders had also tasted victory last year and was a strong contender. The standout of the day was Dispong Kiatnarongrob, who had already shown strong performances in recent tournaments. Other challengers were Dimitri Vaes and Brecht Van Damme, while Frauke Van de Moortel, Nancy Darck, and Nadja De Moor might have played a deciding role.

Usually, you’d expect advanced players to win every duel against promising players, but one surprise emerged from the 32 such matches: youth player Wout Schotte defeated Brecht Van Damme (27–37), scoring the upset of the day. He became the first promising player to beat two advanced players—he had previously beaten Nadja De Moor in last year’s Easter tournament.

Each advanced player played two or three matches against other advanced players. Only Dispong Kiatnarongrob had to play five times against fellow advanced players. The first two rounds had only three such duels, and none in the third, leading to five advanced players still undefeated. Brecht Van Damme had already beaten Nadja De Moor (43–21) but lost to Dispong Kiatnarongrob (52–12) missing a win secured by move 50. Ralph Reijnders prevented Frauke Van de Moortel from staying perfect (21–43).

The undefeated group thinned in the fourth round, where Tom Schotte and Dispong Kiatnarongrob beat Ralph Reijnders (48–16) and Nancy Darck (47–17), respectively. Dimitri Vaes was drawn down and also reached four points. In the fifth round, Tom Schotte was drawn against Nancy Darck and won (20–44), while Dispong stayed undefeated with a win against Dimitri Vaes (50–14). Ralph Reijnders, Frauke Van de Moortel, Nadja De Moor, and Pierre Poliakoff kept the pressure on with four points each after five rounds.

Round six brought triumph for our Thai resident: he defeated Tom Schotte (25–39) for the first time and maintained an unbeaten record. On board two, Dimitri Vaes narrowly beat Ralph Reijnders (33–31), while Nadja De Moor defeated Nancy Darck (50–14) on board four. Pierre Poliakoff fought hard but lost to Frauke Van de Moortel (39–25).

Despite two matches between advanced players in the final round, the results were decisive: the proud leader beat Nadja De Moor (58–6), and Dimitri Vaes defeated Frauke Van de Moortel (56–8). The other advanced players also won and claimed their fifth point. Only Nancy Darck ended with four points, having lost three times to fellow advanced players.

After narrowly missing the final at the recent Belgian Championship and finishing second in Diegem (both with six out of seven points), Dispong Kiatnarongrob scored his first perfect tournament and thus his first well-earned tournament victory.
Promising Players

At the start of the tournament, two youth players were on the verge of graduating to "beginner" status: Pierre Poliakoff (rating 992) and Bart Verstuyft (rating 991) were just a few points short of the magical 1000 mark. It’s expected that with the next update, Pierre will certainly and Bart will likely be promoted. Other favorites were Wout Schotte and Jana Verstuyft, both with enough experience to defeat other promising players. With so many players, a tie in points was likely, making it important to win by a wide margin and avoid heavy losses to advanced players.

All four favorites had four points after six rounds. The importance of the final round’s pairings was evident: Bart Verstuyft (lost 51–13 to Ralph Reijnders) and Wout Schotte (lost 59–5 to Tom Schotte) faced advanced players, while Jana Verstuyft and Pierre Poliakoff were drawn against each other. Pierre won (44–20) and took the title of best promising player. Jana took second place thanks to tie-breaks, ahead of Wout Schotte. Bart Verstuyft had some heavy defeats and dropped to sixth place, behind Eva Terras and Dimitri Burnay, but ahead of Ferre Devriendt and Romain Volvert (also on four points).

Looking at the head-to-head results among these seven promising players:

Pierre beat Jana (44–20) and Dimitri Burnay (43–21)
Jana lost to Wout (29–35), but beat Eva (50–14) and Ferre (50–14)
Wout lost to Bart (10–54), but beat Eva (39–25).

Juniors

Each junior category was decided in the final round.

U10:
Amelie Marichal staged a dramatic comeback. After losing her first four games (ranking last at that point), she won her final three to finish as the only U10 with three points. Norah Janssens came second with two points, and Mats Vancoillie took third after losing to the winner in the final round.

U14:
Wout Schotte lived up to his favorite role. Entering the final round, he had four points, while Ferre Devriendt and Cédric Bogaert had three. Wout logically lost to his father, while Ferre won his last match and took second on tie-break. Cédric lost but held onto third place, also thanks to tie-breaks.

U18:
Everyone on the podium! Jana Verstuyft met expectations and even had a chance for a fifth win against Pierre Poliakoff, but lost. Sander Schotte (vs. Ferre Devriendt) and Anne Légat (vs. Nancy Darck) remained on three points and finished second and third, respectively.

The national airport provided us the scenery (air planes taking off and landing) for the 1st Diegem Othello Open. The weather was nice, so half of the games were played outside on the terrace. 17 players competed and Tom Schotte came out on top with 7/7, claiming a 50th victory in an official Belgian tournament.
Dispong Kiatnarongrob, our Thai resident, won 6 games and finished second (for the first time). Also Wouter Thijs scored his best result, with a third place and five points.
On four points, no less then seven players, of which the best woman (Nancy Darck), best beginner (Daphne Demoor) and best promising player (Dimitri Burnay). Wout Schotte finished on two points, but still was the best junior player.

First of all we celebrated the birthday of Jana Verstuyft, who served us Othello cupcakes!
The main event gathered 14 players (10 advanced, 4 beginners), and welcomed back Jozef Dumoulin after an on-the-board inactivity of 17 years. For the fifth time in six Ursel events, Tom Schotte finished on top. He managed to win his 7 games, but had two close encounters against Ralph Reijnders and Jozef Dumoulin. It is his 49th tournament victory in Belgian A-tournaments. Runner-up was Dimitri Vaes with 5/7. The last time he finished second was in the 2016 Ghent Easter tournament. Tom and Dimitri did not play during the tournament. Third place was for Dutch visitor Andre Kortenlever, who played well above his rating and won 5 games. Nadja De Moor finished 5th (was seeded 10th) as best woman, while Daphne De Moor was best beginner with a neat 3.5/7 (defeating one and drawing against one advanced player).
In the promising players event with 10 players there was a clean sweep for Schotte-De Moor, with Wout as undefeated champion, ahead of his brother Sander and Stan Roos (son of Nadja). Must said that Bart Verstuyft also remained undefeated, but had to leave after 3 rounds. We'll never know how this would have ended. Notable come-back for Tony Claeys (first games since 2019) and a debute for Pepijn Verstuyft, who nearly had his first win (30-34 loss) in one of his games.
