On the turntable today: Number One Du Senegal - Li Loumouye Nourou (1980)

​Mbalax is Senegal's most popular dance genre, built on complex polyrhythms, driving basslines and latin influences.

​Formed in 1976 after a dispute with bandleader Ibra Kassé from the legendary Star Band de Dakar, this ensemble became fierce rivals to Orchestra Baobab.

​Featuring the legendary vocals of Mar Seck, this cut is an absolute masterclass in tropical groove and raw West African energy. Pulled this treasure out of the crates at during a recent London trip.
