I did 3 trips with Fin and the Belgian Cyclocross Project (BCXP). This was part of my gap year and gave me the opportunity to train and race full time in Belgium over the 2019/2020 season. BCXP is perfect for riders who want an introduction into racing cyclocross full time. It takes all of the stress away from going out to Belgium as Fin has done it countless times before. There is no need to find accommodation as you'll be living with Fin, Thomas Mein, and any other riders that will be on the trip. Travel is all organised by Fin, so all you need to do is live like a pro and race as hard as you can!
My first trip was in October, we raced 5 races over 3 weeks. These were all some of the biggest races in the world racing events such as Superprestige Boom and Gieten. All of these races were amazing experiences as you line up with the likes of MVDP and Wout van Aert! In between races, there is the opportunity to train at the local forest in Lichtaart, which is where all of the professional cyclocross teams come to train on Wednesdays. Alternatively, you can recover in the house and get ready for the next race.
The second trip was over the Christmas period in December. This is one of the most intense 2 weeks of racing that you can do! We did 7 races over the trip and did 6 races in 10 days. All of these events were really tough and great experiences. They came at a really good time as they were a great prep for the national champs which is the week after the trip.
The final trip out was definitely the best one. As most of the CX pros were starting to wind down towards the end of the season, the race speeds were a little slower, so I got more racing in. These courses are always really good. They're all of these unknown but amazing courses that happen at the end of the season in February. Races such as Maldegem and Oostmalle have plenty of sand so remember to bring some sand tires!
I can’t recommend BCXP enough, it’s a great experience, a chance to live and race like a pro, whilst seeing the insane level that the continental riders are at, first hand. Fin takes all the planning stress away and is a perfect way to spend a gap year.
