An unsere Lifesaving-Familie: Vielen Dank an alle teilnehmenden Rettungssportvereine!

The Ocean as an Arena: An Ode to the Versatility of Ocean Lifesaving
This weekend, Blankenberge, the pearl of the sea, turned into the thrilling epicenter of one of the most fascinating sports in the world: ocean lifesaving. Following the grand success of the European Championship in 2023, Blankenberge proves once more its ability to deliver a magnificent international event. What once started as life-saving techniques to rescue one another at sea has evolved into a high-performance sport that demands the ultimate synergy between human and nature. It is a discipline where athletes do not just compete against each other, but must also brave the elements. The diversity of the events showcased on the Blankenberge beach and in the North Sea testaments to an unparalleled versatility.
Look at the dynamics on the water. In the surf race, athletes fearlessly dive into the surf. It is a pure, raw swimming race where technique, endurance, and reading the currents make the difference between winning and losing. As soon as the boards are introduced for the board race, tactics shift. Athletes paddle lying down or on their knees, surfing the waves, where perfect balance is critical. The speed truly accelerates during the surfski race. In these sleek, razor-sharp kayaks, lifesavers cut through the water with powerful paddle strokes, creating a spectacular visual showcase of pure strength and rhythm.
The absolute pinnacle event of the weekend was the ocean man (and ocean woman). This grueling ocean triathlon combines swimming, boarding, and surfskiing into one continuous test of endurance, finished off with a beach sprint. Only the most well-rounded athletes hold their ground here.
The spectacle also moves to the dry sand, where explosiveness rules. The beach sprint is a pure demonstration of running power, with athletes accelerating in a split second on the heavy, loose sand. And then there is the absolute crowd favorite: beach flags. This is a psychological and physical mind game. Athletes lie face down in the sand, turned away from the flags. At the starting signal, they flip around and sprint toward a number of flags that is fewer than the participants. The result? An explosion of reflexes, diving leaps, and pure adrenaline.
This weekend in Blankenberge showed just how universal this sport is. Diversity was bursting at the seams, not only in the disciplines but also among the participants. International contingents traveled to our coast to measure themselves against the national teams, creating an atmosphere of brotherhood and elite sports culture at the highest level.
